How often do you refresh them and how much do you put in them? I have freshened them twice since hunting season with a total of 80lbs. Just wondering what was too much or not enough and what others do.

Yea that's probably a little overkill. I dont put 40#s in mine a year well yes i do two 20# trophy rocks a year makes it.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

i usually just do it once a year... I put a 50lb bag out in each site right at the end of each season.... seems to do just fine...

I set a 50 lb mineral block at the top of my lick and let the rain leach it downhill and into a little depression I made. It becomes like a long mineral trough instead of a hole. When the block is about melted�..I put out another one unless its right before hunting season opens. Usually one or two per year. Make sure to put it out where there�s some clay in the soil and not just sand.

25 lbs di-cal and 50 lbs red trace mineral. If it's a big one I double that dose. Fresh them up with just red trace mineral in August.

I put out a trophy rock and use 465 to replenish it each year.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the input. I used trophy rock 465 after season and couldn't find it this summer so I made a di-cal/salt/trace mineral mix. Sounds like I should be good for the year.

I’m starting to get into “off season” mode and started thinking about mineral sites again. I have several sites that have been around for years. Most of these are becoming deep and often hold water when it rains a lot. Would it mater to put all the minerals in the hole when water is in it, wait till it’s dry, does it mater that it will fill up again or don’t matter? Should I start a new one on the side of the existing one?

Has any link ever been made to mineral sites and EHD? Just seems the mud hole created would be prime habitat for the midge. Reason I ask is several of the dead deer I found in Illinois this past October were near mineral sites.

Interesting thought. Our biologist asked us for any head of one we kill that isn’t going on the wall for researching that stuff. Curious to see what comes of it

I would think it doesn't matter if the hole has water in it when you put the minerals in. Regarding a comment about midge fly larvae. I wonder if they could live in salt water?

they don't live IN the water , only in the wet mud between dry ground and water. It ain't the water, it's the mud.

If I am not mistaken, mineral licks have been illegal in the state of Illinois since at least 2002 I don't know, but these were clearly mineral sites that had gotten a lot of use during the summer. 2 out of the 3 I found had dead bucks within 100 yards.
