1) What's your process for using your grunt call (and any others you have use) for the purpose of attracting bucks.

2) Do you blind call? If you do why? If you don't why not?

3) Do you feel like any particular brand of call has worked better than another

4) do you feel like any particular style of calling has worked better? Short staccato grunts, long grunts, etc.


I have yet to have any success with eyes-on-out-of-range buck, in response to a audible buck grunt, or blind calling. School me.

ive had more luck rattling that with a grunt

Have had some minor success with it. I always get more attention from younger bucks than mature.
Also, I only blind call. If I can see him then I'm going to shut my mouth until he stops or I stop him so I can shoot.

I use a primos buck roar and a flextone extractor.
My thoughts are to just try to sound like a immature buck.
I believe the louder and more aggressive the grunt then you're going to push deer away.

If you were going to get into an altercation would you pick a fight with something bigger than you?

I�ve had very limited success, but typically smaller deer. You have to have perfect conditions during the rut IMO. I�ve had some curious does come check it out as well. I have grunted at deer in a green field that totally ignore it after a few times.

I've had no success with a grunt call even when I had a grunting buck in the area that I could hear and not see. I would grunt back at him and not sure if it scared them or what but never saw them. I always had better success just sitting still and quiet.

I carry one just to get a tailing buck to stop long enough to shoot never had any luck calling one in but alot of times if chasing a doe they will atleast stop and look for long enough to pop one off.if that dont work i whistle

Have called in several bucks over the past 5 years. Mostly deer I could see in the distance. Only blind call that I know worked was on a 10 point my son was able to take. I rolled a can twice and then hit the buck roar. The 10 stood up in some downed timber on the other side of a creek 150 yards away. Within 2 minutes he was laying on the ground 20 yards in front of us (we were sitting on dove stools by a pin oak).

Tru-talker is the call I have had the most success with.

I can add it to the list of things I've wasted my money on. Grunt tube, rattle bag, Dead Down Wind, tips to strippers when I was young.

chitt, I'd just as soon leave my bow at home as forget my grunt call in bow season, actually I carry at least two grunt calls everyday in my pack. And the rattling horns strapped on the pack.

Works almost every time in Illinois not so much in South Alabama,but every once in awhile lightening will strike down here too.

Ive killed two of my biggest bucks with one and have grunted up plenty of 2/3 year old bucks that have come lookin...during rut I won't leave without it

I've seen several bucks within 15 min of blind calling. Maybe coincidence or just luck. I've grunted several does right to the tree as well.

I've had very limited success with one. I carry one to stop a deer for a shot but other than that I don't use it. I do blind call with a bleat can during the rut a little but only limited success with it as well.

I've grunted up quite a few over the years. I like to grunt right at daylight and then start back around 8:00. In the afternoon, I like to grunt every 30 minutes or so. All I can say is when it works and he starts grunting back, it's a lot of fun.

For those who haven't had any success with a grunt tube, you're doing it wrong. I've had great success with a grunt tube. I use a tru talker, the one that looks like a rubber hose. From October to February I don't go in the woods without it. I do very little blind calling but if I can see him I'm gonna call to him even if I don't plan to kill him. I've found that it works better where it's thick and he can't see good where the call is coming from. The secret is not to call to much. When I see a buck I'll give him a short grunt just loud enough to get his attention. Once I know he heard it I go silent until he starts to move. If he comes my way I don't make a sound. If he continues on the way he was going I'll grunt again until he acknowledges that he heard it then silent again. Think of it like this. You're walking down the street and someone says "Hey". You stop and look where you thought you heard them but you don't see anybody so you continue on. Then you hear it again but don't see anybody. After a few times you'll walk over to where you heard them to try and find whoever it is that keeps calling. It works more times than not.

Example

Sunday afternoon Ashley and I had a 9 point come in behind us and in the process of her trying to turn around and get on him he saw us and spooked. I grunted and he would stop but she couldn't get him in the scope. We did this probably 8 different times until he had circled all the way around and was in front of us before she made the shot. Her best buck so far.



Tuesday morning from the same tree I saw a good buck crossing in front of us and grunted to stop him. Ashley again couldn't get him in the scope. He started to move and I stopped him again, she still couldn't get on him. He stood there probably two minutes and I got impatient and grunted to get him to move. He didn't like it and turned and trotted off.

This morning, Wednesday, I had a four point come in and caught me standing up in the stand to stretch my legs. He bolted and ran about 80 yards and started blowing at me so I grunted in hopes that it would shut him up. It did and three grunts later I had called him back into bow range even though I had no plans of shooting him.
