I personally like a shorter rod so it is easier to use without hitting the water. I have been using a 6'6" med BPS Carbonlite. Most people will recommend a slower action like a crankbait rod, but i feel the softer action doesn't give a sharp enough action therefore I like the faster action. I have also found that lighter FC line will free up the action quite a bit. I have gone to 8 pound test when I can with a perfection loop versus a palomar or other tight fitting knot.
