I know that I'm in the minority, but if it meant having better chances to see more and better deer, then I am in favor of continuing to look at changing our hunting rules/regs and shortening season length in areas where it might be deemed beneficial.
I do realize there are a large number of hunters on this forum and in this state who would prefer to have fewer rules/regs, enjoy the liberal season length, even if it means seeing fewer deer and fewer quality bucks.
The one point that absolutely cannot be argued in regard to other states that have more regulations and shorter seasons is the great majority of them have substantially better deer hunting than Alabama.
So the question to be answered is - Why? Is it because those states have better deer genetics/habitat, or is it because they have better biologists and conservationists who manage the deer herd properly?
What about Tennessee's habitat is so vastly different from Alabama? The deer hunting is hands down better in that state than here. Why so?
The biggest misconception in this argument is that you are managing the deer. Managing the hunters should be the goal and the deer management will follow. The OP is right in that we need to establish common goals and articulate those goals to the public. Exactly! Gotcha1 started a thread the other day how we as hunters joined together with a loud enough public voice is the only way to make a change. I suggesting now that this forum ( not representing Aldeer just hunters that participate here ) should elect someone to speak at the upcoming CAB meeting in Montgomery right after deer season ends. If possible without fighting among ourselves we could start a thread and discuss what the number one concern is. Our we can do nothing and continue bitching about it again. That’s a great idea but sadly I doubt we could even come to a consensus on what to lobby for since each Hunter across this state is experiencing vastly different hunting experiences depending on what area /zone they are hunting in.

Shoot does, shoot does, shoot does, SHOOT ALL THE DAMN DOES. Somewhere in that line is a key to the drop in population of deer in Alabama, IMHO. ^^^^^^ This

Yeah, you're in the minority, you must be a yankee or foreigner. You just want to change everything because it's not the way YOU want it. As far as the statement that you keep repeating that 'other states have substantially better deer hunting than Alabama', PROVE IT! Please tell me that this whole post is sarcasm....

Does a state exist where the hunters from that state are happy with the hunting, or management of their DCNR ?

As far as the statement that you keep repeating that 'other states have substantially better deer hunting than Alabama', PROVE IT! I'm neither a yankee or foreigner, although I'm sure that is the best response you can muster instead of coming up with a well thought out counter-point or actual opinion of your own as to why hunting in this state is as good or better than most others. But, if you want an example of actual statistics and facts proving that it's not, here you are: Deer Hunting Grades By State I'm not here to say the article above is gospel truth, but it at least is an attempt to show the status of deer hunting in states with available data and statistics that are measurable and relevant. I'd like to request that you to oblige and tell me, in your opinion, why hunting in Alabama is just as good or better than other states? Also tell me why the grade of "D" is wrong in the article linked above?

Excellent post by the OP. For the last 15 years all we have been told is that the "expert" wildlife biologists at Auburn would make the rules and we needed to trust them since they are experts and we are not.
Well now we have decimated herds in half the state that can't handle the doe killing and haven't heard any response from the biologists who told us to kill does so the bucks would magically grow bigger.
The current feeding rule is more illogical than ever. They tell us feeding will lead to disease, but yet allow feeding as long as you don't hunt 100 yards next to it.
Game check has just become an aggravation to keep honest hunters honest. The admitted abysmal participation rate is embarrassing. That alone tells you how little respect the hunters of this state have for the people so called "leading" the agency.
As OP said, they totally failed to sell to the public whatever vision they have for the deer herd, so people have no incentive to buy in other than not getting a ticket.

Even in Illinois they are complaining about the lower deer population in their state. I just laugh and tell them they can come hunt in Mobile county anytime if they want to actually see a low deer population.

I'd also like to point to the article I posted and ask this question:
How does a state like TN have nearly half a million fewer deer(estimated), but every person I know that hunts in AL who also hunts in TN will tell me they see and harvest more deer on their properties in TN than in AL?
I believe it's because by the time the rut starts in TN, gun season has only been open for about 1-2 weeks in most places. By the time the rut starts in the majority of places in AL, gun season has been open for at least a month if not 2 months. Deer in TN don't have as much time to feel the pressure and pattern hunters like they do in this state due to the long continuous rifle season. This is why I think it would help to have a much more intensified focus on breaking up gun season into 2 parts in areas with a rut beginning later, and ending gun season early for places that have an earlier rut.

NO. In EVERY state, hunters bitch about how their agency sucks, is only writing tickets for revenue, the insurance companies are controling season dates-lengths-limits, and their hunting SUCKS compared to "all the other states!"

I'd also like to present this data from the article I shared earlier (linked again below for ease of reference). Take a look at all other Southeastern states who earned a grade of D, and notice the deer population per state compared to Alabama. It's absolutely unacceptable for deer hunting in this state to be graded a D with 1.5M deer. Deer Hunting Report Alabama - 1.5M Florida = 700,000 Louisiana = 500,000 South Carolina = 730,000

1.5 million deer is and long has been an estimate, as have been the "annual harvest totals" for the state.

We have 1.5 million deer in this state, and I only dated perfect 10s in my single days.
