If I can retire when I want to and still be in good health, I�ll be like a kid again WITHOUT supervision. I�ll be dead quickly and pad those numbers, but I�ll have a ball for a little while.

I can draw a full retirement at 47. Hopefully my own business is still rolling by then.

My father retired at 52 back when they broke up AT&T. He is now a pretty healthy 85. Not bad for an Irish immigrant who out lived his parents by decades.

Pretty sure it wouldn't have anything to do with the age of retirement, but rather the lifestyle of the retiree. The sedentary life of the typical American male is shameful.

Just as an example, a few weeks ago I made a post about Crossfit, and probably 95% of the posts were about how they can't/won't do that "kind of stuff". Make a post about running/jogging and all you get is jokes about "if I run, a dog better be chasing me." I'd be interested to know the average height/weight of men just on this website. Not pointing the finger at folks, I just know that height-to-weight ratio and the carb-heavy American diet is killing men (and women) by the millions.

I would sure like to find out how I like retirement. I'm thinking working a day or two a week would be pretty awesome.

I assume you guys retiring in your 40�s and early 50�s are doing It sucking off the public teat. I am sure it won�t be a popular optnion on here but the idea someone can put 20 years in the military or as a first responder and have the taxpayer pay your bills for the next 40 years is one reason we owe the Chinese a few trillion and many major cities are basically in bankruptcy. They should get a very generous retirement which can be drawn on at a reasonable retirement age say 60-65 like most folks. A public funded retirement check at 50 is pure bs. Personally my plan will to be mostly retired in 4 years at 64 but hope to keep working 20 or so a week to pay for toys and family vacations. Plus I only have a little over 300 acres to fool with and that won�t keep me busy full time.

Yep. I lived on Lake Lewisville and the boat ramp was 10 minutes from my driveway. It was the part of Texas I miss most. I want to retire within 10 minutes from another boat ramp.

Negative. Most folks that work in the public sector earn less than similar folks in private sector. A career of reduced income is offset by the benefit of a pension. It's not the worker's fault if govt bureaucrats mismanage the plan and turn it into a ponzi scheme. See social security. For the record, I'm in the private sector and will not have a pension. Every dollar of my retirement with the exception of a small match will be from what I saved.

I'm a firefighter. Nearing 50. Don't give a chit what BradB thinks. 50+ is OLD in the fire service. The chemicals and carcinogens that are killing firefighters off at extreme levels. Most of my original officers died before or within a year of retirement from cancer. So you never had to pay their bills. You got them to sacrifice their lives for your benefit without much cost to you. And they do it for a hell of a lot less than private sector employees in most cases.

The pension system is NOT what's causing the nations debt. Especially not Alabama's.

That said, I understand BradB and his opinion. It's ignorant, but I understand it. If he had a chance to get a pension, he would, just like most others.

I will be taking my retirement and starting a new career. I will continue to bust my azz for my family, while helping others as much as possible. It's how I'm wired. I will also not begrudge another what they've earned. That's also how I'm wired.

Your a moron Brad. I�m one of those early retiree that you say are �sucking off the public teat� I worked 38 years for the Government providing services for ingrates like you. I had several opportunities during that 38 years to take a job at factories and such for almost twice what I was making. But what held me there was my retirement. I knew one day it would benefit me to have to put up with the ingrate public. I live in Tuscaloosa, I had several opportunities to go to work at the local BFG (now Michelin) tire plant. When Mercedes opened, I could have gone there. But while the pay and benefits are excellent, the retirement isn�t. If you look around, you�ll see retirements to workers are going away. Companies aren�t willing to promise a retirement for workers that give their career to them. Instead, most offer a 401k. While this is something, it is solely dependent on the economy. If the economy tanks, so does your retirement.
My retirement is a investment that I put into from day 1 and my employer matched. I am under RSA, it is a self funded retirement that has absolutely no tax money input...
If you want to get on a soap box about people �sucking the public teat� tear into welfare, food stamps, public assistance. Lazy ass�s that sit on the front porch and collect tax money, not people that worked a career to earn a decent retirement.
