As a southern, conservative Republican, I don't like either state or federal gov't telling me how to run my life any more than the next guy, but when it comes to about a dozen fellow Alabama hunters every year dying and/or being paralyzed for life, I am ready to accept a game law requiring a harness for tree stand safety.
The reason we have to wear hunter orange is because it saves lives. The reason we have to wear car seat belts is because it saves lives....thousands every year. For those macho men too proud to wear a car seat belt just because Big Brother says we have to, I can only remind them of what comedian Ron Black says "You can't fix stupid".
The forever impact on a family, friends, huge medical bills and loss of income accompanies every fall. It is indeed sad. Most of you know Mike Bolton has long been the outdoor writer for Bham News and is also currently an Alabama editor for the Alabama Outdoor News magazine. Read his article this month about a young man who fell 25 feet and by a miracle single cell phone call before battery went dead, a search party of 20 found him just before dark "somewhere" in the 17,000 acre Perdido River WMA, and got him airlifted by chopper to a Pensacola hospital, otherwise they say he would have died.
I have often heard Mike's words of wisdom on this subject. Six new steel bolts with proper sheer strength every year for your tree stand is a lot cheaper than wheelchairs. Everyone needs to wear a harness. I know there will be those who will say I am sticking my nose in other people's business, and we already have too many game laws. But at age 72, and having been very active in past years in DU, NWTF and GCCA, then at least I am one person who would not fight such a law, because it would save lives, broken bodies and family heartache, not to mention the financial loss. It is NOT about fines....rather safety!
However, I have no answer for a harness for stands that face the tree. I guess it would be better to smash your face from 2 feet into the tree than land on the ground from 20 feet above or more. I don't climb much anymore, but where can you get a good safety system for stands facing the tree? The old system where you put a loop around your waist and another loop around the tree, tethered together was a death trap. If you fell, it would cinch up so tight around your waist you would die from suffocation...only slower.
Bottom line: I think it is time we as hunters at least have some meaningful conversation on this subject without unnecessary sarcasm.

You can face the tree and wear any modern safety system.
I don't always hunt the line, but when I do, I make sure I'm close to my neighbor's 8 acre bean field.

Rock climbing harness would fit the bill nicely.

No you can't wear any system facing the tree. You need to lengthen the tether on any I've found. A linesman's belt is the best choice.

Useless law, like so many laws we have. I don't think people who don't wear one now would start if there was a law requiring it.

When your facing the tree with a normal harness it does get in the way sometimes but if your stand was to fail it will still do it's job. Probably slam you into the tree but that's better than the alternative.

www.huntersafetysystem.com they really offer some great products. I got to use them last weekend and was quite pleased and felt very secure while hunting out of a tree stand.

I wear a rock climbing harness and I wouldn't go back to a traditional treestand harness after using it for a few years. You should look into it. The one I use is a Black Diamond.

HSS is the best on the market. They have an accessory for any kind of stand.
