I just purchased a Ruger American Predator .308 topped with a vortex viper HST 4-16x44 scope. My land is pretty thick with pine and my shot is 50-100 yards at best. What do y'all think is the best .308 bullet for deer hunting?

That's alot of scope for a 50-100 yard shot. To answer the question.... something in the 150 grain category

"Why do you ask"?

Too many people spend money they don't have , on things they don't need, to impress people they don't know.

The secret to a long marriage is to keep on dating, just as you did before marriage. We have "date night" once a week.
Hers is Saturday, mine is Thursday.

The only time a married woman gives those is if your not married to them!

I like them for open shots, but he said he is shooting in thick stuff. I wouldn't want and expansion tip bullet in that. he needs something clunky to punch through the brush. he won't need the extra ballistics for a super long range shot. and yes, it would be nice to drop them as quickly as a SST can do, but I'm afraid his bullet won't hit deer intact if he clips some brush.

Core-Lokt is the best heavy brush deer bullet you can get IMHO

Excuse me, but he needs one bullet. You can't swap for area and have the same poi. Say what you will I use a 140 grain Winchester Accubond for every condition. The results have always been bang flop, except one. That buck took three steps and expired.

I personally wouldn't shot a fmj bullet due to lack of expansion.

No point in just punching a .308 diameter hole in a deer and not having much, to no blood, to trail.

I've shoot the Remington core loc bullet and have had good success with it for many years. Fairly easy to find, and usually a good price.

As for the thick stuff, I read it as it limits your shooting to those yardages you listed, and you aren't going to be shooting through thick stuff.

150 grain core loc.

God Bless,
David B.

At the ranges you are shooting any mushrooming ammo that shots accurately from your rifle at the ranges you mention with be fine. Any spire type bullet is unpredictable when shooting in brush. Large bullets such as 45/70 are not much better. I would rather let a deer walk than risk a non lethal shot. I might get beat up for this but I dont see it nessasary to have a softball size hole blown slap through a deer to kill it.

Hit sumit too soon. In other words shot placement is more important than what you are shooting . Just my opinion.

The idea of a "brush busting" bullet is horsechitt.
