what is the best line for most all fishing.type brand?

Berkly xl mono, 10 pound test. I thought I liked the cajun red, but have since changed my mind. It doesn't do well with our equipment.

Samurai Braid 55 lb.

That doesn't mean Cajun Red isn't good. Worked great for me over three days two months ago on Erie and Ontario catching 5- and 6-pound smallmouth, lake trout and steelhead.

Maybe your equipment sucks or there's operator error.


Trilene XL is good, tough, limp (for easier casting) and has held up over decades.

Vicious Ultimate Co-Polymer is good and won't break your wallet.

If you're not around much brush, Fatty's suggestion for 10-pound test is a good one. Ten or 12- will get the job done in most situations.

If you're around brush, weeds or stuff, you may want to upgrade to 14- to 17-pound.

Fireline. No stretch, high tensile strength, low diameter, and very slick! It's expensive, but it's impervious to sun and heat exposure and lasts for years!

Big Game

I most certainly don't have the best equipment. I have two expensive and the rest are Zebco 33's. The cajun did well in my baitcaster, but the Zebco's it would periodically hang up. You'd have to pull 20 feet very hard to get it out, then it would work great for 10 casts and do it again. The XL hasn't done it once in 100+ casts. I did specify it didn't work well with our equipment.

I'll tell you what it is good for. Noodle floats

For mono, you may want to try Ande.

For monofilament, I have taken a liking to Izorline.

For flourocarbon, I still like P-Line.

Trilene XT for the normal stuff and Trilene big game for flipping and frogging.

Ya'll can have the damn braid and fluorocarbon.That stuff ain't nothing but over priced chit in my opinion.

I've been using the cajun red for the last 2 years and don't have anything bad to say about it.

For saltwater I use MO-MOI (Illusion) small diameter and 16# is like 20# in stregth.

OK dont laugh to hard.i have fished all my life.never been a bass fisherman unless they took my minnow,worm(live),cricket.just aways like to sit back and watch the bobber.as my son gets older he is into all the sportsman stuff just like me but he's into the pro mode.i am trying to learn all this stuff so we can do these things.this is why i ask this stuff.he is a tween member of bill dance outdoors.he will run me to death.

from reading all the post why cant we just use one line?is it that big of a difference?
what is difference in Flo,mono,co-poy,Braid and what is each used for(type of fishing or what ever)?

we are just getting into the saltwater fishing to.will any of these lines be good for it to?

Mono - Has more stretch and shock absorption, and doesn't sink rapidly. Good for crankbaits, lipless crankbaits and some topwaters like a Pop-R or walking baits like a Spook to help keep the action right during the retrieve.

Fluorocarbon - Allows more light through the line so it is clearer underwater and less visible to fish, especially in clear water. More dense, so it sinks and isn't great for topwaters (like the ones mentioned above) but is OK for buzzbaits. Less stretch and, with heavier sizes (14- to 20-pound test) is used for Texas-rigged worms or plastics and jigs around cover. Also OK for crankbaits.

Co-Polymer - A mix of mono and fluoro, with qualities of both. A good all-around line.

Braid - Zero stretch. Very sensitive. Great for flipping plastics and jigs. Because of the small threads woven together to make the line, the line diameter will be small compared to the pound-test size. For example, 30-pound braid will have the size (diameter) of 10-pound mono ... 10-pound braid will be about the size of 2- or 4-pound mono ... 65-pound braid, for heavy-duty flipping in weeds and cover, will be about the size of 25- or 30-pound mono.

I use braid for topwater frogs, jigs, worms, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and have played with it with crankbaits, although with no stretch you'll either get 'em in the boat or rip the bait from the fish's mouth if they don't have it good.

Braid CONS - Bad backlashes can be tough to pick out of the reel spool. If the line isn't spooled on tightly, when you set the hook it can dig into itself on the spool. Definitely a learning curve.


If you want to fish saltwater, I'd go with fluorocarbon or co-polymer.

If you're pond/lake fishing, 10-, 12- and 14-pound test should be fine. You could use the 12 in salt and probably be OK, too.
