Looking to buy an 18 foot boat soon. I want a 4 stroke, 90 HP.
Anybody had any experiences? Good,bad, whatever. I'm probably leaning to the considering Mercury, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha.

First thing I would reccomend is a larger motor for an 18 foot boat? But, add Johnson and Evenrude to that list of manfs. and take your best "deal."

The 18 I'm looking at is only rated for a 90
I may look at different boats too.

I used ti fish a lot and it didn't go without notice that when someone was at the dock trying to work on their boat to get it running it was almost always a Mercury.

I just bought a boat with a 4 stroke Yammy 150 on it, like it so far!

Can't go wrong with Yamaha, Suzuki, or Honda's 4-strokes! They're all pretty reliable engines.

Interesting... Here�s some info on who made what based on model year.
2006 model Mercury four strokes from 2.5 through 30 HP are built by Tohatsu.
Before Yamaha entered the U.S. market, Mercury's Mariner line was built by Yamaha.
In 2006 models, Mercury four stroke powerheads from 40 to 225 HP (except the Verados) are built by Yamaha.
2005 Mercury four stroke powerheads from 25 through 225 HP (except the Verados) were built by Yamaha. Several of those models used Mercury drive legs, electronics and EFI systems (replacing carbs Yamaha used in similar sized engines).
Mercury's agreement with Yamaha ended in March 2006, at which time Mercury is expected to phase in more four cylinders (75 to 115 HP) based on the Verado engine block, but without supercharging or intercooling.

Thanks. That is interesting. I always though Mercury made Mariner and Force. Seems like Force at one time was Chrystler, then Merc. I don't know, I get confused. I had a Force 75 I think. Really a good motor. Ran quiet and never gave me any problems......

I'm still deciding. I keep going back and forth on the 4 stroke/2 stroke decision.
I'm thinking less maintenance on a 2 stroke, and they run a lot cleaner now, but the 4's sure are quiet and clean.

[/b] i have a Yamaha 4 stroke.i wanted the evinrude 2 stroke but the price was to high.i have a buddy with the evinrude 150 and it is as quite or quieter than my 4 stroke.it gets better gas mileage(hour)than mine to.i know this for a fact.we both put in 2 gal of gas and road side by side and when i ran out he went 3 miles up river more.that was a 115 4 stroke vs 150 2 stroke. have a 26 footer and he has a 24 footer.also my tops out at 22 mph and his will top out at 26 mph.
