So one the young 8pts I've been watching for the past 2 years finally shows back up missing one side of his rack. Remaining side is now 5pts. All I have is still images and no video so I'm uncertain if he is limping/ injured.
For those who know, is it likely for the other side of this deers rack grow next year? Or once they lose one side of their rack it's gone forever?
I appreciate it.

It's gone completely? That sounds like a pedicle injury. If there's an injury it's usually a deformed side, not completely missing. A pedicle injury usually can't heal.

Well it's hard to tell from the three images I got of him. However it sounds like I should really hope to see some development of antler on the other side opposed to no development?

If he had both sides in the past and now only has one this year, it is likely that he injured it and it will grow back next year. It is not gone forever.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I had one opportunity to take him last year during bow season. A good friend of mine whom I shared images with kept saying he was young and to wait. I'm happy he is still alive and he will get another pass this year if I am lucky enough to see him in person.

I have seen a rack break off while in velvet. He bled bad for about a week but as far as I could tell he a good rack the next year.

It's impossible to tell. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. An injury might heal by next season. If he was a good looking young deer, his genetics are still the same. He could still produce excellent offspring. An injury is not a valid reason to cull a deer unless you have reason to believe that the injury will never heal and you want to remove him so that the younger deer get his share of food.

Great comment yelp softly and pretty much where I am. His genetics are good for where I am so he gets the benefit of the doubt at least this year.

If the loss was due to injury, there are several outcomes. If it's a pedicle injury, it'll never grown back correctly. If the buck was hit by a car and it jacked up one of his legs....chances are real good that it'll never grown back correctly. If he got it caught up in a fence or something and didn't injure the pedicle, it should come back just fine next year.
If he showed good genetics, he would be a good one to leave as a breeder buck even if his rack is screwed up in the future.

A broken leg will usually affect antler growth for only a couple of three years, then back to normal.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

I was watching a good 8 point all last year. The middle of November he shows up on cam missing one side. Not broke off shed at the pedicle. I found the shed a couple of weeks ago and it was hollowed out at the base where it attaches to the pedicle. Must have been a parasite or some other abnormality.
