For all you S. Alabama folks who enjoy saltwater fishing, the Pompano have been biting well at the Gulf State Pier...word has it a new state record was just bagged with a 6lb 15oz fish, surpassing the old state record by over a pound!

I took my girls down to GS a few weekends ago, and we stopped by the pier and walked out on it. From the time we got on the pier until we got off the pier (long enough to walk to the end, watch a couple of spanish being caught, and walked back), there were probably 10 or so pomps caught, some of them were nice sized one too.

I got married while I was stationed at Pensacola and rented a house from a fellow out on Gulf Beach Highway. There was a net shop a couple of blocks from my house and the lady there taught me to knit a net and I made a 12 ft cast net with weighted bag from nylon parachute cord. My bride and I would go out almost every night and wade out into one of the back bays and catch some fish with it. We were wading one night and I threw it over a bunch of phosporous streeks and caught a bucket full of fish. They looked breamish to me and were about 8-10 inchs long. I threw them all back but one and took him to show to a neighbor. The neighbor told me they were pompano and they were selling at $6.00/lb then, 1959. I don't think they are that expensive now.
One night we were way out and she stepped on a stingray or flounder and when that thing took off she threw the bucket down and went up my back like a house cat and I had to back pack her to dry ground. That was the last time she ever went cast net fishing.
