This is also incorrect. You can work while receiving or even filing for disability benefits AND get approved. Having said that, that amount of money you can make is very low. Currently the limit is $1170.00 gross monthly....and no, I couldn't live on that.

As for those who have never worked, they CANNOT receive Social Security disability, they will only be eligible for SSI disability which has the same medical requirements, but is not funded by employee/employer contributions

I don't think he meant to say that it can't happen that you get approved while you have a job or are just recently out of a job, I think what he meant was it isn't going to happen because they have a mandate, which surely is informal, to deny anyone that may give up and get back in the working world. Bottom line is, it is possible but it ain't happening.

Gun doc,
I can't divulge what I know, or how I know it, about SS here on the innerweb. To do so would mean putting some private and confidential information, about friends and family, on a public forum.
Most of us dont know the difference between SSD and SSID, in fact there is no difference from a taxpayer standpoint.
We do agree on one point, there's far too much fraud and we all know someone receiving benefits that aren't deserved.
My argument is when a deserving person has more than 1/2 dozen qualifying disabilities, according SS rules, and he provides doctor records and proof with initial application, and STILL gets denied. Then he has to appeal and begin the 2 or 3 year waiting game. It happens every time, or at least far more often than not.
Most choose to get a lawyer because its complicated and cumbersome and one mistake can cost months of additional waiting.
I realize this isn't your fault, personally, and you can't change the system alone. But it is flawed and needs fixing. There should be a way to streamline legitimate cases for individuals who have worked a long career and then find themselves in need of assistance.

I hate making a good first impression. There’s no way I can keep that shit up.

I know a guy that coon hunts almost every weekend and draws disability. Seems to me if you can go where coons and coon dogs go, you can work a job.

And SSA actually prosecutes those cases. The problem is they have so few OIG investigators, for every 1 that gets prosecuted probably 50 get away with it. The resources involved in putting a case like that together are so costly, they usually go after the lower hanging fruit of people continuing to receive benefits from a deceased spouse/parent's record.

The problem is way too many people in this country think they are deserving of a handout. Too many don't want to work. People don't have pride anymore. Other generations would have been embarrassed to get food stamps or have their kids get free lunches at school. SSA and other agencies are overwhelmed by the amount of people that file for benefits. You can't have a smaller government and demand more services at the same time. Our system is imploding because we are paying more out than is coming in.

Not to debate the issues with people who actually deserve to receive benefits being denied and put on waiting lists....

What I got out of the article was there are 18.5 million people getting a check and 1 million on the waiting list.

And then that's just this. What about SNAP and all these other programs?

There are roughly 5 million people in the State of Alabama.

Let's call it 20 million getting a check every month just for conversation.... that's everyone in AL, MS, LA, AR and KY. The entire population of those States.

Get a SS check, get some SNAP, work a part time job for cash so you've got some walking around money. 5-6 of you pile in Grandma's house.

Why work when you can hang out all day?

Its a shame for the person that truly qualifies and has to compete with those underhanded individuals.

And a lot of them CLAIM to have been self employed them get a tax refund when they never worked a day. We get those reports of they are on SSI and when we start to recomp their benefits they say "oh I didn't work, that's wrong, I never filed a tax return". Then when I tell them all they gotta do is sign a statement and I'll have the earnings removed they are all for it. After they sign it, I tell them we will also notify the IRS and they will have to pay back any tax refund they got along with interest and penalties. It's amazing how how fast they change their story when they realize SSA doesn't charge interest or penalties on overpayments even if fraud was involved.

Well at least y'all get a chance at having it. As a 20-something I assume I won't have anything waiting on me by the time I reach anything close to a "retirement"
