Bugfixer... Great information there!!! After reading the "Conclusion" from the site you provided, I stand by my original statement about the Northern rut occurring, per se, earlier than the South and for reasons the website you provided stated.

Here it is:

CONCLUSION
Peak whitetail conception above Latitude 45 is very consistent, offering strong support that photoperiodism is the key factor. This finely tuned system, evolved over eons, is critical to their survival. Deer in northern climates are born late enough to benefit from spring green-up, but early enough to achieve sufficient growth to survive the rigors of winter.

Moving south, winter survival becomes increasingly less of a factor. Habitat and rainfall become more important, and because they vary so much across the South, even within states, so does the rut. Additionally, many Southern populations contain genetic material of deer transplanted from northern states that creates a predisposition to breed in mid-November.

jlccoffee, I don't doubt you man. I guess what I'm trying to say is "on average" the rut, per se, is earlier in the North than it is in the South and certainly, there are exceptions.

I agree with Bugfixer's website that this rutting pattern has evolved over eons of time for reasons Bugfixer's website states. Late born fawns in the North would have a tough time making it during the stress of winter.

Anyway, I wish I were independently wealthy where I could hunt the rut in each part of the the nation! I would be off the Coast of Ga early in the season with ya!!

Have a great weekend jlccoffee and great discussion. It's why I love this site. smile

Don't have to be a rich man to hunt Georgia and Florida. October rut on the coast, November further inland for Georgia. December in parts of Alabama and Georgia. January for much of Alabama. Early February in the florida panhandle....you can find public land in all those places.

Beans, corn, sub-species, soil, and even genetics matter very little if they are killed as a 1 1/2 year old 4 point.

Its all in the temps northern deer have to be bigger to survive the cold also they have a defined rut so the fawns are born early enough to be big enough to survive their first winter.

Im about to really start one so get the popcorn:
Its evolution, and not we came from monkeys evolution which I dont believe in. Its simple evolution like antibiotic resistant bacteria. Ok Here goes. I dont think i have to explain the surface area to volume ratio which dictates that larger mammals are more likely to retain body heat, which in turn gives them a better chance of survival. Over generations if the larger mammals were surviving at a higher % then they were passing down "larger genes" to their offspring. The smaller mammals were more likely to die during harsh conditions so the rate at which their "smaller" genes were being passed down was slightly lower in the gene pool than the "larger" genes. Over long periods of time Genetically those mammals that live in colder climates grew larger in size than those who live in warmer climates. Are there other factors? Absolutely, I dont care if they have the best genes in the pool if they dont get the proper nutrition they will never meet their genetic potential. Are giraffes large? Yes but look at the length of their legs and neck(adaptations). That increases surface area. Elephants, yes but look at the adaptations = large ears- to combat heat. Thats whats cool about nature is that animals adapt despite their genetic makeups find a way to survive. And whats really cool is how the genetic makeup itself slowly changes over time. Just ask any doctor why penicillian is not a fix all antibiotic anymore. A few decades ago if you were sick you got a penicillian shot to fix everything. Its no longer effective because the bacteria adapted by the same basic genetic principals. Hope I made my college genetics professor proud. Shout out to Dr. Otto.

Proven? Where?

Shuter just posted a biological report from Canada saying Bergman's is invalid.

So, is it invalid or does your questionable Eskimo-Ethiopian theory hold water?

Giraffes are close to the equator. They're gigantic.

Elephants are close to the equator. They're enormous.

Dik-Diks are close to the equator. They're so small they could be crammed in an overhead bag for airline travel.

Why aren't penguins the size of cows? They're at the poles and must combat the weather. Bergman's would, theoretically, mean we would have penguins that look like NFL linebackers.
