Yes, Stalk hunting Hunters' Choice. 2 deer per day (2 does or 1 buck and 1 doe).

Be sure to wear hunter orange: hat, shirt, pants, underwear, socks, boots, gloves, earmuffs, and sunglasses.

This may sound stupid, but can you hunt from a tree on this hunt? I am new to the state, and stalk only sounds to me like you have to be stalking on the ground, hard to stalk from tree

There was certainly a day on Skyline WMA years ago when this might be true, but those days are long gone. The days of hunting escape routes because there will be so many people pushing the deer are also long gone. You better be on natural moving deer these days or you won't see jack. There ain't a tenth the pressure on Skyline that there was when I was a kid.

JUGHEAD, I haven't been up there on a gun hunt in probably 20 years. Do you have any idea why the the hunting pressure has dropped off? Is it simply because the Mgt area is probably twice as large as it use to be? The time I was up there, I didn't realize it was a gun hunt weekend and I went to bow hunt. You couldn't look more than 100 yards either direction without seeing a person in orange.

I really don't know for sure, but I'm sure the size could have some to do with it. I suspect most of it has to do with the way the daily limits are these days and the growing popularity of hunting clubs. I know when I was a kid, everybody and their brother would come to Skyline for the either sex muzzleloader hunt (from all over the state even), simply because there weren't any other opportunities in the county/state to shoot a doe unless you were a bowhunter. These days, getting to kill a doe at any point during the season and not having to wait for a specific day to go gun hunting is pretty appealling on private land compared to the short hunts on the WMA. Plus, a lot of people really do believe that the WMA's are downright dangerous because of "all the people". Simply isn't true, at least not anywhere I've been in the last 10 years. Heck, I still go on Skyline some (if I get a chance to scout some that is) even though I've typically got some good private land to hunt on. The only good buck I killed last year came off of Skyline and I was getting ZERO help hunting where I was hunting. It was a pretty good stroll to get off in there, but it ended up being worth it.

Maybe I need to check it out again, for bowhunting anyway. I love me some bowhunting...

A buddy of mine killed a nice 10 point on Skyline 2 years ago on a gun hunt. He went in totally blind, no scouting, hadn't been there in 10 years or so. He walked off a road, found a bench on the side of a mountain, sat on the ground, and a 130" 10 point walked straight up to him. He's lucky that way.

"growing popularity of hunting clubs."

Not trying to be an arse, but clubs aren't new. I'm 45 and my father was in a club - landowners, lease-holders, club rules, camphouses/trailers, etc. - when I was less than 10 years old.

Clubs have been around for decades.

I'm aware of that. Did ya'll use the internet, that Al Gore had already invented, to find said club like you can these days? grin

No. There must be 2 real lucky people in this state.
