grab horns, walk. Seriously my HSS has a drag strap that comes in handy. The drag ain't as bad as getting it in the truck.

I am a little different than most as I process my own. I have a packable gambrel I put in my back pack along with a skinning knife, gloves and a garbage bag.
Once I have a kill, I find a strong limb and string it up. I bone out the hindquarters, inner/outer backstraps and if anything left may get some off the front shoulders and neck. I like to shoot through the front shoulders if I can. I put it all in the garbage bag and pack it out. Not much left once I am done and the yotes clean up the rest. Can be a little tough packing it out but not as tough as trying to drag one through the woods. I don't own a 4wheeler so that is not an option to me.

If I'm far back in the woods its usually something like this....
walk up on deer
High five self on such a spectacular shot
Look around to see what route is the shortest back to a road
Start dragging deer
After 10 feet, realize the deer is heavy
10 more feet, switch hands
5 more feet, cuss
5 more feet, try to breathe through my nose and not my mouth
3 feet, gasp for air
3 feet, trip over a stick and bust my arse
2 inches, cuss more
1 inch, drop the damn deer and head back to the truck for the atv
Walk back to the truck, unload the atv.
Drive atv to deer running down every tree less than 3 inches in diameter I come across.
Climb up on rear rack, brace my legs, try to pull deer up onto atv.
My feet slip and I fall off the atv and drop the deer.
Try it again.
Lose grip on the deer and fall off the opposite side of the atv this time.
Tie the deer to the trailer hitch and drag him to the truck.
Swear I'm never shooting another deer by myself again.

Hunter Safety System is the best way to drag a deer manually. There is a loop on the back and a tether that you can wrap. It makes life simple when you have to pull one out of a thicket, which I had to do last weekend.

I use something called a "dead sled" - basically a thick sheet of black plastic with tie down straps included. It also comes with a handy heavy-duty nylon strap. I slide the deer on the sled after it's dressed out and then drag it back to the truck. The sled doesn't do anything to make it lighter - I always swear I'll never do it again! The sled does help it slide across all the crud o the forest floor that snags and hangs you up while dragging the deer.

I use a Game Cart with the Wheel Shield Kit. Load everything up and head out. I leave it at the trail head when I break off into where I will hunt.

3toe i have a question for you - I've thought about packing a gambrel and hoist and boning out the meat but only when I hike more than a mile into public land WMAs. I hunt a lot of the mountain WMA areas here in the north part of the state and dragging a nice buck out uphill by myself isn't an option. Is it legal to do this on WMA hunting areas?

I go get my 17 yr old. He drug out a fat nanny saturday plowing over saplings that would have killed me. Said dad just grab and go, thats the way to do it.

I've been thinking about buying one of these or packing in a tarp but it kinda sounds like a game cart would be the best way to go. In the past I have talked myself out of hunting certain spots because I knew that if I killed anything I never would be able to get it back to the truck by myself. I hunt public land so no ATV's or driving my truck to the deer.

I would think no because I think you have to check in any deer you kill on a WMA. I am sure someone could clear that up for us. I hunt some private family land so it is not an issue for me. I will say this, it is ALOT easier to do it in the woods if you cannot get aq 4 wheeler or truck to it. As I said, I waste very little. Ribs and a little neck are about all that gets left on one after I am done. I can do it without gutting them too, even get the inside loin.

If it doesn't weigh to much I just drag it. Once at the truck I hold the rear legs while climbing into the back and then grunt while lifting/pulling the deer up and back into the truck. If it weighs to much I will gut it before I start the drag, or I will go get some garbage bags and clean it on the ground. If it's a stud, I will call in some favors so I can get it out intact so I can get a live weight.

Drag it till I can get 4X4 atv or Toyota UTV to it. I have a removeable hoist system in the flatbead Toyota. I always make sure they got big drag handles already attached!

I have a home made "invention" similar to the dead sled which Venator mentioned. I use a piece of corrugated tin that blew off the barn after a storm. I roll the deer onto it, bend the corners inward to prevent snags and have both ends of a rope tied to one end of it. It slides pretty easily over just about anything. Through creeks, over bushes and it shields the antlers from hanging up on things, as well.
