So there is three different materials (shakes, tin, and hardie board) being used for the siding?
Yes, but instead of using Hardi Board I'm using LP Smartside. I like it better for a variety of reasons. It's lighter, stronger, made form real wood, easy to cut, handle and nail and I think it looks better.
I used a spray paint can of primer to hit the ends with as soon as I cut it and before I installed it. That said, I have had some scrap pieces sitting out in the rain for weeks and they look just like they did when I bought it. I think it is good stuff.
The siding will be getting a coat of subdued green, sort of an olive color and the shakes will be sealed and left natural. The tin will be allowed to oxidize and weather naturally. The thought here was that I won't be up on a ladder 30' in the air painting the upper portions of the cabin as I get older.
The cabin, for now, is basically a 20'x24' box with a shed roof, so I used a mixture of materials to to give it some architectural interest. At least that was my thought process. I'm sure people drive by the cabin and see our slow progress and say, "Why won't that idiot make up his mind about the siding?"
I searched for a lot of pictures of cabins when I designed ours and it was images like this (although much more architectural than mine) that inspired me to try some different stuff...
