Looks great. If the shine bothers you that much, you can do the following: 1. Buy a cheap kiddie pool from WalMarks 2. Fill said pool with some dirt and clay 3. Add water 4. Convince Mrs. Irish that y'all need to do a little Mud Rasslin'. 5. Once recovered, just start throwing the mud all over the tin and problem solved once it is baked on

It rained quite a bit this weekend, but we still made some progress and finished off the last project on the view side of the cabin... The guardrail. This project has been a long time coming and to be quite honest my decks have been an accident waiting to happen so we were glad to finally have this done. The goals here were to: 1. Keep someone from accidentally falling off and killing themselves. 2. Not messing up our beautiful view. 3. Looking kind of simple, neat and industrial. I used 4mm galvanized cable I got from Harbor Freight with a tensile strength of about 2500 pounds. I connected it to the eye bolts using double crimped aluminum ferrules. If the force I had to apply to the crimping tool was any indication, the ferrules should hold. Anyway, on to the pics... Eye lag bolts screwed deep into the corner studs:  Eye bolts bolted through the 6x6 posts with nut and washer on the back side in a counter sunk hole:  The cable passes straight through the center post:  We are going to cap the posts with something, we just haven't figured it out yet. She is leaning toward some blue or green glass post caps.

Cap it with some 2x's across the whole length so you can sit drinks down on the rail?

I would, but the whole point is: When you are sitting in a chair, enjoying your drink while looking at the view, I didn't want a giant 2x running across the middle of it...  I'll have end tables out there for people to sit their drinks.

I could enjoy that view for hours! I'll have to have some of you guys up there after I get it all finished. Our goal is to have the exterior finished by the end of the summer. On a big side note, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the water authority now has the trunk line all the way to my cabin now. We won't be getting water though until they have it all the way to the end of the properties on our side of the mountain. Still huge progress is being made on something that I questioned would ever happen.  Of course it's not a cabin weekend without a little grillin' and a little corn squeezin's.

Got a surprising amount of work done this weekend. Just chipping away a little bit at a time. 1. Hole cut in the wood stove alcove for the chimney. 2. Flashing and roof installed and the support box installed. 3. LP Smartside installed on the North side of the cabin. 4. Got all of the free kitchen cabinets trial fit that we got from some friends. I started to draw up a sketch of the kitchen and measure all the cabinets, but instead Mrs. Irishguy and I just cleaned out the kitchen area of scrap wood and sawdust and went at it. She was pretty stoked to see her "new" kitchen! On to the pics: Of course if you're going to work you gotta eat! Right? Wagu beef burgers and fresh grilled corn on the cob...  Not a bad sippin' whiskey for a Friday night...  Got up Saturday morning and after a cup of coffee, we decided to see of all the free cabinets would fit. Sure enough they did, even though the kitchen they came out of was reversed. We are going to have way too many upper cabinets. The electric stove will be sold and a gas one installed and I'm going to design and build her some kind of stainless hood for over the stove. I'm going to build her a wood chopping block island for the canter and we will have a bar sticking out for a couple of stools on the left by the door.  Started on the lower siding late Saturday and finished on Sunday. There will be a band of the cedar trim at this same elevation on the front and both sides of the cabin and the siding and the cedar shakes will stop there and then it will be corrugated tin the rest of the way up.  Cabin by markvdowning, on Flickr Saturday night had to go old school on the fillet mignons and baked potatoes.   Followed it up with a few glasses from an old bottle of Madeira wine and a Cuban cigar I brought back from the BVI. We worked hard but had some good husband and wife time too... We just sat outside and looked at this until it got dark and we got too sleepy...

Slowly but surely. Finally had a weekend with no rain and managed to finish up the lower half of the cabin siding. Now we are down (or up) to installing the "J" flashing and the corrugated tin on the upper half of the front 3 sides of the cabin and then we will finally be done with the exterior.   Found some time to cook some good grub too... Some Italian sausage, peppers and onions...  Hobo dinners on a bed of coals the way God intended...
