This is one thing I'm NOT going to do. I'll be damn if I'm going to work my ass off all my life and leave a bunch of money for my kids to piss away. They can work and save like I did and my mom and dad did.

Shoot I will. As long as theyve worked hard, are good with money, and arent on drugs Ill leave them everything I have.

Travel? There is nothing more miserable for me than traveling. I'm still trying to make myself do some things, but I'd probably be more content to sit here and watch TV. I think that's what I'll do with the rest of the day. smile

I respectfully disagree; I plan to stay active as long as possible. I have 2 friends that are 78; one walks, works out, travels, golfs, hunts, fishes and walked my ass off in turkey season. The other has been mostly sedentary since he was 60; he just died. I will take option 1 as long as able.

There is no disagreement between us; I also chose option 1 as long as possible. I still make myself carry out my daily exercise program and do what I can. I can't do much with severe osteoporosis; anytime I pick up something wrong I break a vertebrae in my back. I promise you, do that a couple of times and you will cut back on certain activities.

Some people are blessed with better genes than me and are able to stay active longer. But you never know what your fate will be regarding your health until it's gone, and nothing will change that. Man makes plans, and God laughs.
LOL these young boys isn't got a clue Steve.

Poor guy sounds bitter. I guess he's going to put in his will that he wants everything to rot???

Kind of sounds spiteful. I didn't realize that telling your kids tough chit was more loving than giving them a better chance to succeed in life.

I'm not bitter nor spiteful. I want my children to stand on there own feet. If you think leaving your children a bunch of money gives them a better chance to succeed your sadly mistaken.

I wouldn't say that's what's wrong with the world. I would say continuing to give to your kids leading them to destruction is. I just don't see leaving them with an inheritance as a bad thing unless there is a special circumstance where it just wouldn't be smart (they're on drugs or something like that).

So you're telling me that a child who inherits $500k isn't more likely to succeed and better set up for success than someone who inherits $5k?

Snuffy is right with some generalizations.
Where is the incentive to work hard if you know there is a big stack of cash waiting for you.
Some will take it and invest and some will blow it on Coke, hoes and Land Rover's.

And some poor people will take every penny they have an gamble it or spend it on heroine.

The rich stay rich and the poor stay poor. That's a generalization that is shown to be true in numerous studies.

Proverbs 13:22 seems to be the verse in question. It says, "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just."

I haven't noticed that second clause happening a lot in regards to this world, so I suspect that the whole verse may be primarily about something besides money. I think Snuffy is saying he wants to teach his family what is really important in life, and it's not money. I can attest to the fact that Snuffy is a generous man who tries to live out his faith, and will never forget the time he sent me money for a homeless couple he had never met.

I've noticed that kids that know they are gonna get a large trust fund at age 21 often don't turn out so well, but passing on things like a family farm or business is something I think most of us would like to do.

The sad thing is it's becoming increasingly hard to do it. It's likely that the only way my grandchildren inherit our farm is if my wife and I both die quickly. If we linger the way most do it will eventually be owned by the nursing home.

Ok, this thread has gotten too morbid, and a lot of it is my fault. How about this - I have paid a deposit for a combo duck and quail hunt in OK in December. I've never been on a good, legal, duck hunt, so I am gonna waste a bunch of money that my kids will not get to inherit. smile

Sounds like a problem with their raising perhaps.

Teach them not to do that.

Seems like a simple fix

(Of course they are)

The one who was going to piss it away would have whether $500 or $500k.

I've never inherited anything but I am blessed with very generous parents. My parents (both still alive) haven't got much yo leave behind because they have given of themselves to me and my brother and other members of the family. They would give to anyone in Need, and already have given me more than I deserve. Thats what I have tried to do for my kids as well, I do what I can for them now, even though that may not leave much to be inherited.

I hate making a good first impression. There’s no way I can keep that shit up.
