In the past two years I've killed two bucks 4.5 year old or older off plots. We don't shoot does on plots so we see great activity on them. We are also in a lower deer density so the better our fields the more deer we can draw. Plus I enjoy planting and sitting on plots in the afternoon. I like cutover and woods morning and mid day.
Its legal. You enjoy it. You don't have to explain anything to anyone.

If money were no object, all my plots would be 20 acre corn or bean fields with spoke-like shooting lanes radiating out from my shooting house. Shooting lanes would be planted in oats.

If money was no object I'd buy Portland Landing and never plant a Greenfield. That would be fine. All the deer off of there would come to our food plots.  Only if they jumped my fence. Money is no object, remember? As long as it is a big pen I won't think any less of you.  There is a pretty big high fence across 225 from Dr youngbloods property. There's better deer out side the fence. Total waist of money if you ask me.

If you've ever seen how deer act in alfalfa you'd be amazed. at least the ones I saw. They become cows, you can pull up and they keep eating. They don't run and spend most of the day in the fields. For me, here I'd plant peanuts. Peanuts packs weight on'em and they love 'em.

Buck forage oats,daikon radish and imperial white clover. I'd spend the rest on ferilizer and lime. Exactly, my friend and neighbor is a retired agronomist/professor. He developed Buck Forage oats. I've seen what goes into his serious work and can vouch for him. He recommends Daikon radishes. These crops may not work as well in certain areas of the country but should be the best thing in north Fla. and south GA. and I would assume south Ala. I track for him and his family on their 800 acre farm near my place and his test plots are immaculate.

There's better deer out side the fence. Total waist of money if you ask me. Some of the biggest bucks I've tracked were trying to get back inside a high fence. One with a broken leg kept trying to jump through the bars on a 10 foot metal gate but his antlers wouldn't fit. We heard him banging as we approached. He would hit it, bounce off and try again.

3toe, I had a really pretty stand of alfalfa for about 3 years, but i failed to take good care of it. The weeds took it over. Saving money now to do another field in the future and I'll take better care of this one with chemicals and fertilizer. Deer loved it, they would bed in it and then stand up and start eating again.

Problem with that approach is that allows coons and deer to really wipe out a large portion of the corn quickly after the cut is made (if talking about ~20 acres). Have tried similar approach and it was fun but little left by the time gun season began.
