Do we have any public land conservation groups in alabama? I know there's awf but don't really know what they do to protect public lands. Out west has multiple groups that focus on protecting the backcountry and keeping public lands public. I'd like to join a group that's active in keeping the public land we have now.

Do we have any public land conservation groups in alabama? I know there's awf but don't really know what they do to protect public lands. Isn't this supposed to be what Forever Wild does? I realize it has strayed from its original intent...

The SE Chapter was profiled in the Backcountry Journal magazine a couple of months ago, and our very own Sapperdawg was featured in the Winter 2017 edition. I'm not sure what is on the website, I will have to look. We do have a meet up.com site, but it does not get much use yet. If you need info, feel free to PM me.

By the way, the intention is to eventually form individual state chapters, so the SE Chapter is provisional at this point.

My friend Cheada are the two board members representing AL in the greater SE chapter.....we are more than happy to add additional folks to the board if you are interested.
At last count, AL had 24 members, with a target number of 50 to be a state chapter. Personally, I think the SE Chapter would be a good one to just leave as a region, rather than bust into individual state chapters.
As far as the website, we are not shown as official recognition will happen at the April board meeting in MT. We have met the criteria: doubled our membership, held several events, established a BOD.
Feel free to ask any questions you may have - while I am serving in Iraq right now, I will do my best to answer questions; and if I can't Cheada will.

If you are a member of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers you should look into the Rendezvous in Missoula, MT. It will be held on April 7-9. I am not going to make it, but SapperDawg went last year and had a blast. I was looking forward to making lots of connections out there, but just not fitting into my schedule this year. Excellent line up of speakers this year (Steve Rinella, Randy Newberg, etc) and an opportunity to meet lots of people who are serious about conservation and Western hunting. I wish I could go!

Take a look at a facebook page a friend of mine created ,, it's still a work in art but we have the following. We stand ready to fight those who want to take what belongs Alabama and give it or sell it to the feds.
face book "Save the Mobile/Tensaw Delta" Some years before we formed this group an attempt was made by a group of people who wanted to have the Delta studied hoping to get the Federal dept of the interior to buy up all the public and private land(thousands of acres) surrounding the delta and turn it into a National Park. The attempt failed due to large numbers of local Alabamians who showed up in force with their political might.
A second attempt came about to Federalize the Delta so We formed this group to stop the attempts of some people who once again wanted the federal department of the interior to buy out public and private lands around the Delta and designate it as a National Park. we successfully stopped this second attempt from happening.
The second attempt by a group called Friends of the Delta, made up of some wealthy folks along with some ecology minded people in Alabama and some outside of Alabama mostly have personal monetary gain on their minds, while trying to make it look like they're really trying to save something endangered.
Their plans were to take most of the delta and make it off limits ...no hunting ,,no fishing, no nothing, any area they deemed accessible was to be by kayak or canoe. Not while I'm living and breathing ,, no sir.
Anything the Feds have taken over is a disaster. My group works to keep our lands and our waters free from federal govt control. We emphasize working with state and local agencies and groups to keep the rights of Alabama's woods and waters in the hands of the state and it's citizens and sportsman. Not in the hands of money hungry land grabbing feds.
We activate as soon as we find any federal , state or local bills being considered before their legislative bodies. If the bill trys to take away rights we're on it. you can help out, just keep and eye/ear out for things in the paper ,the radio , TV, internet, tell us about it on the FB page, the administer will look at it and see if it meets the test.
We're all for Forever wild and other groups or people who feel the way we do.

After listening to several of Steven Rinella's podcasts with the guys from BHA, I just joined tonight. It seems like a very worthwhile organization lead by guys that feel the same way I do about preserving public access.
In the words of Rinella (credit to his brother): "I've never met a man who looked at beautiful mountain and said I'm glad that's private property and I can't go up there."

Welcome to the Southeast Chapter Yelp. Rinella has a great podcast, wish I was going to the live event in Missoula next month. We currently have 46 members in AL as of July 11th, up from six in 2015, and 29 to start 2016.
BHA just releated their first podcast with Alabama native Hal Herring. If you like podcasts, this was a great first episode.
