A 7mm is what is referred to as a 7mm Mauser or 7x57. Old school but still a very good round with the proper bullet choice.
A 7mm-08 is a necked down .308

A Remington .260 is also a good round for young shooters in my opinion.
One of the nicest youth/lady rigs I've had was a .257 Roberts using a 117 grain bullet. The .257 can be hard to find ammo for depending on where you live.
