I've wanted one of the egg-style grills but just can't bring myself to spend $800 - $1000+ for one.

I've seen these a couple times lately and looks like you can get a 20" one for around $300-350, depending on where you look.

They're double-wall, insulated steel, as opposed to ceramic but they seem to get pretty good reviews so it looks like it could be a decent, inexpensive alternative to a BGE/Kamado Joe/Primo/etc. Anyone here have personal experience with them?

EDIT - Home Depot has the 22" with a cart for under $300...

I have one. They don't seal as well out of the box as big green eggs, but there are some mods to make it close. The built in temp gauge is useless as tits on a boar hog. Also they dont last as long as ceramic grills because of rust problems with the steel. But overall for the price, I am happy. It is better than my propane grill and uses less charcoal than standard grill.

I have one, and I love it. I got my whole setup for around $400. Lowes has all of the accessories for that grill. I use it around 2 or 3 times a week. It will do about 6 racks of ribs with a rib rack. It will hold it's temperature really well. For what you pay it is awesome! Especially if you don't have an extra grand. It does come with a 5 year warranty.

I have one and I'm pleased so far.

good to hear....as far as the temp gauge, even the folks I know with high-dollar ceramic grills use a digital thermometer when they need to be really serious about regulating temp, so I'd probably go ahead and get one. and yeah, if it only lasts 4 or 5 years, that's still pretty dang good considering the price tag.

Before I put my temp gauge in, I put it in the oven and put the oven on 250. It was 5 degrees low. I just try and cook a little low.

Be aware that Dale's, Moore's and most all marinades have a good bit of salt in them and over time will eat thru metal when the drip pan is allowed to overflow, etc. I've seen it first hand on 2 high end gas grills.

They need to make a grill cover that looks like a chicken suit for these egg grills

I love it. 0 complaints so far. haven't used it yet for smoking but have done Steaks, chicken (breasts), wings, burgers, deer and pork tenderloin and I may have done some brats (don't remember).

I'm sure a $1200 BGE would outperform it in some aspects, I just can't imagine it would be a noticeable difference to most people, especially not enough to justify 4x the price.

I do recommend buying this cover for it (fits like a glove) if you plan on keeping it outdoors or on only a partially-covered porch/patio.

Do you think that cover makes a big difference? I just threw my old grill's cover on there and it's loose fitting almost all the way to the ground. Would a fitted cover make a difference?

As long as it's waterproof, it shouldn't matter. Some of the hardware like nuts/bolts holding wheels on, and holding the folding trays and such would probably start rusting if left out in the weather uncovered. I didn't have one so since I was buying one anyway, I bought the one made for it. It goes down just past the hub on the wheels, so it keeps them from getting rained on.

But any waterproof cover should be perfectly fine as long as it's long enough to cover everything.

I passed on one for $50 at a yard sale a couple months ago. It was a little rusty but seemed to be in perfect structural shape. Probably shoulda snatched it up.

Yeah, probably. I'm strongly considering building a table/nest for mine and ditching the legs/wheels completely. Something like this:

That looks really nice. I knew it was a great deal at the time but honestly just didn't feel like fooling with moving it, plus I've got a decent charcoal grill with side smoker already. I like that table.

These style grills are super insulated by design. you can lay your hand on the side of it when it's at 600+ degrees and it's just "warm" at best. The only part that gets too hot to touch during cooking is the metal vent on the top.

I had a thread about these a while back. We picked ours up at Lowes for $199 because it had a small dent in it about the size of a 50 cent piece. Best $200 I have ever spent in my life.

Got the cover and the ceramic disk for indirect cooks too.

That was my thought too. I pictured myself pulling my charcoal chimney over that after I dumped coals out and a stray dingleberry coal dropping on it. You should see my deck around where I grill. Little burn marks everywhere.

Nice looking table though.
