If you reload, the .270 is a fine place to start. Load up some 100 grain bullets down to a velocity of around 2400 fps and it will kick less than a standard .243 round. Then, when it comes time to hunt, slip him the .270 managed recoil rounds and he'll never know the difference. Both of my boys have been shooting .270's with cut down lengths of pull since they were 6 using this method and we've had zero problems. Later on, I plan to simply restock their guns and buy full power ammo instead of having to buy a new caliber because they think they're too big for something smaller.
