Need some help. Got a 7 year old. Wanting to go with me and tote his own gun an kill one. He is a shrimp and ain't gonna take much kick. Probably weighs 45 lb. Should I get a 223, 243, 7-08. Never shot any of them so don't know how much they kick.

I got my son a 243. He shot it with no problem when he was 6. I am moving him up to a 7mm-08 next year. I think he could shoot it now, but I want to get at least 2 years out of the 243.

7mm-08 with the managed recoil then later you can step.up to the normal factory loads

My kid started with a youth, single shot .243 and a low power scope. He killed 2 big bucks with it while I was sitting beside him.

.22 til he can shoot good. I have a small 8yo who will be shooting a youth model .270 w/ a sims recoil pad and reduced recoil rounds. I think as important as caliber is a fun that fits him. He prefers to shoot the 20ga over the .410 because the one he shoots fits him a lot better.

.243 but with hearing protection. I've seen more than one kid intimidated by the bark. When he gets past that, the bite aint to bad.

I would go with a .243 with a SVL recoil pad. You definately don't want to go with anything that make him dread the recoil.
Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts,hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

I cant stand to shoot my boys youth model 243 that thing will bust your ears, ear drum,make you flench, so be dang sure to to get ear muffs,plugs or something.

Also important is that he has a very good rest to shoot from, like a good sturdy rail or a bipod. He won't be able to hold steady without it.

You guys are right on bout those little .243s being loud. And the SVL pad is a good idea. What we used to do is carry a .22 when we went to the range and I let him shoot it a lot before shooting the .243.

If you reload, the .270 is a fine place to start. Load up some 100 grain bullets down to a velocity of around 2400 fps and it will kick less than a standard .243 round. Then, when it comes time to hunt, slip him the .270 managed recoil rounds and he'll never know the difference. Both of my boys have been shooting .270's with cut down lengths of pull since they were 6 using this method and we've had zero problems. Later on, I plan to simply restock their guns and buy full power ammo instead of having to buy a new caliber because they think they're too big for something smaller.

If a child isn't big enough to handle the recoil of a suitable rifle to kill deer is he ready to hunt? We had a Rossi single shot and the sound was worse than the recoil. Also remember that the single shots recoil more than the bolt actions because they are lighter. IMO of course.

A seven year old can't handle a full size 270, definitly going to need a smaller, lighter, shorter rifle. Those managed recoil loads are good stuff.
Skull, my grandson can handle and shoot his 223 H&R all by himself at age five. He shot a hog with it before Christmas at age four(bday in May), I helped brace the barrel against my rifle for the offhand shot.
I've seen the argument that kids shouldn't be allowed to hunt till they can handle the gun of choice all by themselves. I don't follow that reasoning. A LOT of kids can't shoot a rifle standing, or even sitting. But let em rest the gun on a shooting house window ledge and they are good to go.
A gun for a small child has to have some weight to reduce the recoil, thereby making it harder to handle without a good rest...
I personally feel that "ready to hunt" is more of a head thing than is he big enough. Varies with the child and how they were raised around guns/hunting.

Baker started shooting his 7mm-08 at 7 yrs old! I bet he didnt weigh 60 lbs. I bought him the Steyr which has the removable butt plates so the gun can grow with him. He shoots the 140 grain Managed recoil loads and has had no problem with the recoil at all! The managed recoil is a good load and retains plenty of power out to 200 yards. I was concerned with the performance of this load at a long distance but he killed a deer that weighed 198 at 200 yards, entrance and exit through both shoulders! Hope this helps!

He has been around guns since 3. He goes out with his red rider by himself. I have spent a lot of time teaching him about guns so one day he don't wonder up on one and have no idea what it is and have an accident. Saying that I'm just not wanting to get something that's going to scare him and make him not want to hunt anymore.

One more idea, go ahead and get a nice scope that you can change to another rifle as he grows. I bought my grandsons a Bushnell Elite 4200 and put it on a .243 youth NEF and then later changed to a Rem 700 .270. Avoid the "package" scope and rifle combo.
