Fred... I was speaking more to the recoil aspect. Not the ability hold the firearms steady. I agree that more of it is mental.

Baker started shooting his 7mm-08 at 7 yrs old! I bet he didnt weigh 60 lbs. I bought him the Steyr which has the removable butt plates so the gun can grow with him. He shoots the 140 grain Managed recoil loads and has had no problem with the recoil at all! The managed recoil is a good load and retains plenty of power out to 200 yards. I was concerned with the performance of this load at a long distance but he killed a deer that weighed 198 at 200 yards, entrance and exit through b
oth shoulders! Hope this helps! I went with the 7mm-08 for my 8 yr old grandson because the ammo is available in the managed recoil loads. That thing has almost no recoil with those loads

Get a good youth 7-08 with managed recoil loads and he'll have a gun for life. I got my son (age 10 now) the Howa 1500 youth 7-08 a couple years ago, and when he gets bigger I plan to purchase the full sized stock. He can pass it along to his kids and do the same. My 9 yr old girl shoots this with no problems.
Like mentioned above - I would get some better glass than the factory combo, but that can come later if needed.

My 3 year old shoots my .338 bean field gun just fine. It sometimes knocks him a flip, but it usually only slams him up against the shooting house wall when he pulls the trigger.

Whats the diffrence in 7mm and a 7-08 A 7mm is what is referred to as a 7mm Mauser or 7x57. Old school but still a very good round with the proper bullet choice. A 7mm-08 is a necked down .308 A Remington .260 is also a good round for young shooters in my opinion. One of the nicest youth/lady rigs I've had was a .257 Roberts using a 117 grain bullet. The .257 can be hard to find ammo for depending on where you live.

My youngest son killed a doe last year with a nef .223. He now shoots a 7mm-08. The single shot 243 kicks harder than the 7mm-08. I also would say get him a good scope. But I'm not talking about a high dollar scope. Look at the bushnell banner 3-9x40 with 6 inches of eye relief. Nothing scares a kid more than having a scope pop em. Some times once is all it takes.

My son weighs <60 pounds and shoots a .308 with Remington managed recoil ammo. I have that Bushnell long eye-relief scope on my son's rifle and his 20 ga slug gun (and I have one on my slug gun). It may not have the best glass, but it does the trick and will keep the scope off of your nose, eyebrow, and forehead.

been there done this , get him the shortest 243 single shot you can get . he's so lite he'll give with the recoil . use the light mags made by hornaday 100gr sp . i love them
my nephew problem was with the length , the weight was to forward on any thing but single shots . recoil was never the problem with a 243 .

This will be the 3rd year my 10 year old has been shooting a 7mm-08 using 140 grain bullets with no problem.
