Bill, there are some canoe put-ins on the Flint River but the distance between them is long for a wife-kid unaccustomed to the water and canoe. Unfortunately there is no canoe livery (rental) anymore on the Flint ... there was one about 10-12 years ago at Winchester Road.
There is access here near my house and possible take-out at the Hays Nature Preserve, also by our house. I'll do a little checking for you.
