What did they ever do to the guy who shot the one on West Point Lake? Did he get fined? That was about 10 or 15 years ago I guess. That was just to the northeast of Auburn along the state line. I would imagine there were likely several sightings by hunters along the Chattahoochee as it roamed north out of Florida or wherever it came from.
I saw one about five years prior to the guy shooting the one on West Point about 50 miles to south around Seale�..just a couple miles off the river. This would have been around 1998-99... After I saw it, the guys I was in the hunting club with found out who had the land previous to us and called them up. Sure enough, they reported having had hunters report a few sightings in the years prior to us hunting there. This was the land around the old Yuchi Golf Course if any of you are familiar with it. It�s directly behind Russell Co High School. I actually saw an ad on craigslist a couple years ago where whoever is hunting there now was looking for members.

Well neither of those things was that common when I saw one. and when I DID see it, I raised my gun.... not a camera.
an not having one on camera doesn't mean anything. I have seen bald eagles but we don't catch them on camera. I have seen particular bucks from my stand that we have never caught on camera. heck, I personally walk through the woods during deer season and I never walk in front of a camera! my FIL and wife manage to avoid the camera too. we really don't get too many coyotes on camera, but we see them hunting and find the tracks. same with the neighbors dogs. They sure do bust up a lot of my hunts though.
Need I go on? there are a lot of things that are in the woods but don't get caught on camera.
When I saw one, I saw it twice. The first time wasn't a good look and could have been something else, except I saw the tracks. The second time was very clear. 0% chance of mistaking something else for a cougar. Who wants to call me a liar just because they haven't seen one in person and ol' Chuck Sykes says there aren't any?
They will be here and be caught on a game camera I believe in time. They've got a couple of confirmed trail cam pictures in Tennessee, one in an area about 75-100 miles from the Alabama line north of Waterloo.

We used to hunt land that bordered the chattahoochie in Russell county. One of my friends swore up and down that he had one walk right under his stand. I've known him since childhood and never known him to tell a lie. It would be an obvious travel route from Florida.

They actually got enough people with cougars on game cameras in Waynesboro TN up through there to Kentucky lake that TWRA had to admit they had a couple.

We took pics of one standin on a wall at fort morgan me my brother and my mama an daddy. Stood there bout 5 min an we completely emptied a disposable camera. The house burnt in 2010 so most of our pucs are gone but i still think a few may have survived ill have to see. But its legit. We were told it was more than likely a florida panther tho on account of the location.but it was in bama. Probly 2003 or 04 when we took pics

Never heard of that. Been here in Huntsville since 1988 and grew up nearby. Can't recall every hearing about one being shot but could have happened. That Valhermosa-Cotaco area probably has a few unusual wild critters roaming around from the river up to Union Hill and Eva and there'bouts.
I know a late friend of mine, in the late '90s, told me about watching a black bear sow with two cubs on private property between Georgia Mountain and Parches Cove. I know that's a big stretch, but he didn't specify. Only told me a general area, but said he and another person who lived there watched the three for about an hour. I've heard stories about mountain lions in that area and wouldn't be surprised about the validity, based on who was telling me.

Experts point to fear as the reason Alabama hunters have been trapped in treestands afraid to come down in the dark after seeing what they were dead certain was a cougar. Whether you call them cougars, panthers, mountain lions, pumas or any of the other names they go by, they are all the same critter, and all of the fish and game agencies in the Southeast belittle these sightings, passing them off as the overactive imaginations of fearful, or hopeful, individuals. And, when palpable evidence of cougars arises, it is typically filed away as the result of a released or escaped captive animal.
However, some recent confirmed encounters with cougars have biologists softening their stances. Whether they�ve been here, hiding in the shadows all along, or whether it is the result of nature and reproduction coupled with human protections bestowed upon these creatures, bona fide wild cougars are popping up in the Southeast, and these encounters bracket Alabama like the canines of a big cat around a deer�s spinal column.
The Border Cat
On Nov. 16, 2008, Dave Adams, of Newnan, Ga., killed a 140-lb. male cougar while deer hunting between the two northern arms of West Point Lake. The kill was less than 3 miles on Highway 109 from Alabama.
Off the bat, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources issued a statement claiming the cat was likely captive reared, presenting evidence in the form of low parasite levels and scuffed paw pads, presumably the result of time spent in a concrete holding pen. But, when DNA testing was returned, the young male turned out to be a wild Florida panther, or eastern cougar, traced back to the small reproducing population of some 100 to 120 panthers in the Florida Everglades more than 650 miles away by road.
How did it get to Troup County, Ga., and how did it cross all the roads and all the hunting leases during the heart of Georgia�s rut without someone spotting it? A Florida official said young males have been known to travel great distances when seeking to establish a new home range. And there was one dark, out-of-focus trail-camera shot of what looked to be a large cat taken Nov. 2 in Harris County, Ga., just south of where Adams shot the panther two weeks later. But that was the only other reported sighting of the cat.
