What did they ever do to the guy who shot the one on West Point Lake? Did he get fined? That was about 10 or 15 years ago I guess. That was just to the northeast of Auburn along the state line. I would imagine there were likely several sightings by hunters along the Chattahoochee as it roamed north out of Florida or wherever it came from.
I saw one about five years prior to the guy shooting the one on West Point about 50 miles to south around Seale…..just a couple miles off the river. This would have been around 1998-99... After I saw it, the guys I was in the hunting club with found out who had the land previous to us and called them up. Sure enough, they reported having had hunters report a few sightings in the years prior to us hunting there. This was the land around the old Yuchi Golf Course if any of you are familiar with it. It’s directly behind Russell Co High School. I actually saw an ad on craigslist a couple years ago where whoever is hunting there now was looking for members.
We used to hunt land that bordered the chattahoochie in Russell county. One of my friends swore up and down that he had one walk right under his stand. I've known him since childhood and never known him to tell a lie. It would be an obvious travel route from Florida.
