They both serve the same purpose. The top has been gone a long time. They are both can openers. Now there are no can's in MRE's. The bottom one was given to soldiers to open their C-rations.At one time all, canned goods were opened with the top one. It came stuck on the can.

Well I knew their purpose, but I think I would have looked like a fool trying to figure out how to use the top one...

Not really Jono. There was a metal tab you put in the hole and just rolled it until the can was open. The can was dangerous tho. The edge was razor sharp. Having a P38 on your key chain is good thing even now.

Anyone know the proper technical names of these devices? One's name is same as very famous pistol.

I'm 27 and I know what the bottom one is. It is a door hinge-beer bottle opener hybrid

P-38 is correct. We used the term Can key instead of Church key. Walther's P-38 was first double action semiauto pistol.

No , it's not Dave. The name is USP-38. We called them P-38 in the Army. They just dropped the US. Church key is a name for bottle opener, not a can opener.
