A family member just bought a small tract of land that I will be able to hunt. They want to fence it (not a high fence) to keep their dog from straying onto neighboring property, but I am worried on the effects it will have on deer travelling through. The former owners kept some cattle, so the entire perimeter is currently strung in 4 strands of barb wire, which the deer can go over or under. They want to do a 4' hog wire, which grown deer I'm sure could jump, but I'm worried that if the fawns can't make it through then mama won't come through so much either.

Any thoughts on what would work to keep a squirrel dog in but still allow deer to travel through?

My daughter has a Huskie in a residential neighborhood. She uses a wireless underground "fence" to keep her dog in the yard and has been happy with it.

They had little flags all around when she first put it in. The dog wears a collar with a shocking device to help him learn when not to go any farther.

I think it may be a system similar to the ones in this link, but you'll need to shop around befoe you buy. There are a lot of them reviewed in the link:

The dogs ran a deer out of her yard one night this week.

They will have an area around the house fenced in for the dog's general recreation. The property as a whole is about 100 acres, they don't want to worry about the dog running onto neighboring properties while squirrell hunting, they've heard the neighbors can tend to be a little bit outlaw, they are worried the dog will get shot or stolen. Therefore they want to fence the whole boundary with something other than barbwire. I'm telling them to maybe just run a couple strands closer to the ground.

I have a wireless containment system we used for our dogs. Worked great. Just put the collors on abd you can adjust the level of shock Dogs quickly learn where they can go and where they cant. I will make you a fair price onit if you want to PM me.

that's quite a bit of hog wire, not to mention work. Do they plan on doing this themselves?

They may loose interest in the project once the prices are figured out.

They know what it will cost. What I am trying to figure out is what will (a) keep the dog in, and (b) have the least effect on deer travel. The dog is a Feist squirrel dog and doesn't jump very high.

I bet he can climb hog wire though.

I used the underground fence around 5 acres. I would not recommend it. It worked great for the intended purpose but unfortunately was also a lighting magnet. Even with a large grounding rod, I still managed to blow 3 transmitters off the wall.

We use a underground wire around about 2 acres of lawn for our Boston Terrior and it is great, won't ever have another dog that isn't trained as a pup without it. Lightning does blow them up, I probably average one a year. Don't put the wire on top of the ground or in a fence, dang squirrels will eat it up.

A six week old fawn can easily clear a 4' fence.

Thank you Swampy and Bubba, that's what I was trying to learn. Was not looking to wireless fence/shock collar for 100 acres.

Most dogs i have squirrel hunted with haven't gone more than 100 yards from the hunter, maybe that is just the ones I hunted with.

I have an underground fence on 1 1/2 acres and lightning got my first unit too. Then i bought a surge suppression unit made for under ground fences and have not had a problem since. It plugs in to the receptacle and the wire from underground plug in to the suppressor, the a jumper goes from the suppressor to the fence unit. I bought it from sportdog and it puts a lifetime warranty on the fence and the suppressor.

My lot is 2 1/4 acres with 1 1/2 acres fenced and deer come to my feeder on the back 3/4 of an acre everyday with my lab barking the entire time they are there. Deer become accustom to their surroundings, dogs and all.

A 330' roll of wire is about $150. It takes 16 rolls to fence a square 40 acre parcel. Square plots take less wire than long, narrow plots of equal acreage If it's already fenced you may save on t-posts but I'd bet you still need to put some H braces in to pull the wire off of.

The 39" field wire is slightly cheaper than the 42 or 48" fence.

With that much wire to pull I'd get a unroller that attaches to the 3 pt hitch on a tractor. Should find one under $500 new but would be worth every penny doing 30-50 rolls of wire.
