Water Dog is way outdated. Training has come a long way since it was published. There are several really nice programs out there. The cheapest is Rick Stawaki's Fowl Dogs. I have never personally used this program but heard really good things about it. Gun Dog Supply has all 3 video's for $60. Evan Graham has a very nice program also. It's a lot more expensive but pretty easy to understand. His Smart Fetch is probably the best force fetch program out there. GCT trains with his program and has some nice dogs. The premier trainer in the US is Mike Lardy and his program is Total Retriever Training. This program is maybe a little harder to follow for someone new but it's outstanding. Just pick a program and stick with it. A good book to get started with is The 10 Minute Retriever by Amy and John Dahl.
