Man, I hope you don't hate yourself after the carpenter bees start attacking those cedar shingles. It's a great look, but the bee problem never goes away. Even if you treat the wood, they eventually come back.
I won't hate myself regardless.
The good part is that there are cedar shake houses that are hundreds of years old, and all I really need these to last is about 30-40 years and then they will be someone else's problem.
All the cedar shakes are going to be on the lower areas of the house that are easily accessible and even if later on I decide to go with something else it won't be that big of a deal for me.
When I was researching types of siding, it seemed like everything from Hardieboard to wood composite all had issues enough to say to myself, "If it all has issues I might as well go with something that I actually like to work with."
So cedar it is for better or worse.
