I heard you can hunt the wildlife reserve for free and with a bow....I am in huntsville area and really would be interested in some insight on some good areas to hunt...Can some folks here that hunt that area give me some information? Thanks

All you need is a permit.
It can be picked up at the visitor station on hwy 67 in Decatur.
I think the main thing to know is no hunting on Sunday and they do have some areas that are closed to hunting.
But the permit has a map also.

I think you can just print a permit off there website and it also has a map.

I honestly feel like you could hunt in any wood lot and see deer.

I am from huntsville as well and everyone i know who hunts it seems to talk down because of their personal experiences of not seeing many deer there. But i think its one of the most under-rated areas in north alabama to hunt, its a wildlife refuge for a reason and some very good deer have been taken off of it in years past. You just have to walk or ride a bike and those willing to do the work and research could easily get on a nice pattern out there.

Blackwell swamp is a good area. Watch out for the skeeters and the gators!

No snakes or queers (thank God) yesterday...but the skeeters were still out in abundance!!!

I have hunted the north side of wheeler for the past 4 years. If you are looking for a challenge its a great place to go. Everywhere you go will be heavily hunted. I have personaly encountered queers near the Arrow head landing area  I recomend driving around on a sat. morning, find the place with the least amount of trucks and come back sunday to scout. ps if you want to hunt hogs go try the area around the 65 river bridge.
