I've seen in the Little League World Series the speed comparison to MLB. I was wondering if someone could figure out the comparison in Softball. Most Softball pitchers throw anywhere from 65-70mph at 43ft. My 10 yr. old daughter faced a pitcher that we gunned at 51mph at a distance of 35ft. Just wondering how that compares to the college speed comparisons. Just bored tonight and was curious.

Here is a quick breakdown on travel speed in feet/sec.
A 100mph pitch is traveling 146.67 fps. Travels 35' in .238 seconds.
A 90mph pitch is traveling 132 fps. Travels 35' in .265 seconds.
A 70mph pitch is traveling 102.6 7fps. Travels 35' in .341 seconds.
A 51mph pitch is traveling 74.8 fps. Travels 35' in .468 seconds.

Chad I know some softball pitchers have made some big name MLB hitters look silly in exhibition settings, (david letterman I remember the best). but I bet if youd give Alex Rodriguez a week to practice, he kill her.

So 51mph at 35' equals .4679 seconds from mound to plate
And 70mph at 43' equals .4191 seconds
Not much difference lol

51 mph at 35ft is pretty dang quick, especially for a 10 year old. There was 2 pitchers there throwing about that. My daughter got a hit off one, but the other got struck out from help from umpire. Throwing that hard pitcher doesn't need any help. Even her team fans were like wow that was outside.

Never trust umpire with two strikes. And i've yet to see a good umpire that didn't call those pitches on the black strikes.

To start this off, 65-70 is above average for a softball pitcher. Average HS pitcher is mid to upper 50's.
The 10 year old @ 51 may or may not be the next Jackie Traina. What gun was she clocked On ? Also, when she moves up to a 12" ball at 40 and then 43 feet she will be slower for a while unless she is a big girl. She can overpower batters now with her speed but she had better learn how to move the ball later on.
Just to be up front about my ramblings, I have a HS freshman daughter that pitches. Averages about 56, sometimes faster or slower. Her riseball is usually her fastest pitch. ERA is around 1.95 and she has 211 K's on the season.
That 10 year old may be the real deal or she may flop. She has a lot of growing up and ball to be played yet. I just hope she wears a face mask. Mine took a shot to the top of her forehead earlier this year without one. She thought she was "grown up" and didn't need it but now realizes how important it is.

I never saw one throw close to 70 at 10 and I've seen a bunch of high powered kids play. Saw Bryce Harper at 12yo. Danny Almonte was a beast at the LLWS (11-12yos) at 76 mph, but was later found to be 14YO.

One big problem for baseball hitters against softball pitchers is softball does not use a mound. This changes the hitters prospective on the ball. That plus the low release will deal fits to a batter.

The girl was gunned with a jugs gun. She plays for the #1 ranked 10U team in nation. She got the only hit that game, but got Picked off by catcher the very next pitch. I'm not exactly sure but they've won over 100 games with I think 2 losses. I think that may of been when they played up in 12U.
Those bruises are bragging rights now, she said they were sore, but played thru it. She's a tough cookie, but as small as she is, it scares the ol dad sometimes. There's some big 10year old girls out there. She's 4'6 maybe 90lbs. But she plays big. That double she hit against y'all Jeff was a bomb.

If you do a proportion, hitting a 65mph fastball at 43 feet is equivalent to hitting a 52mph fastball at 35ft. It is about the same as your ten year old hitting a 64mph fastball at 43ft. You do have to factor in that your daughter is ten years old trying to accomplish this. (which means less power, reaction time, and speed)

I have a 13yo grandson that has been clocked fairly regularly @ 70-72 on a consistent basis and cranks every now and then to 74.
Course he is 6'1 1/2 and 162# too. His team is practicing @ 60' pitchers mound I think but he played a game a couple of weeks ago with the mound @ 50' and he was wicked to the other team, just couldn't get their bats around in time.

They had a lady Olympic softball pitcher throwing to Will Clark in his hay day. She made him LOOK BAD! This was on one of those sports science shows.

Based on time it takes to reach the plate:
65 mph at 43 feet = 91.454 mph Major League pitch (60' 6")
70 mph at 43 feet = 98.488 mph Major League pitch
71.0744 mph at 43 feet = 100 mph Major League pitch
51 mph at 35 feet = 88.157 mph Major League pitch

We lit him up BTW, coach made sure no 12yo could get a straight fast ball by them. Our hardest thrower was just about 70 on the nose.
