After christmas I plan on getting a lab and trying to train it myself. Tell me what I need to know.

There is also a new HRC club in North Alabama. You can meet a lot of trainers who will help you at their training days. You are also welcome to train with me and my training partner in Sulligent if you would like. I don't know how far that is for you.

Bobby CAHRC does still exist and we will have a hunt test this spring. I'm not sure where the North Alabama club is located but Allen Dilliard, Kenneth Farrish, and Mike Perry are heading it up I think. You need to go with me again to some of the test at the cattle ranch. I haven't run anything with Rascal this fall but did run a couple of started test with my 5 month old pup.I trained several times this side of the cattle ranch and thought about you when I came through Greensboro. You got me hooked on the catfish at the Mustang. I love eating at that place.

The pup has to love you more than anything. Feed him treats, cheap balonga, hot dogs ect. Spend lots of time and build a trust relationship.

When you begin training only use positive reinforcement to start with. Teach him to come when called, to sit, and heal. This will teach him how to learn.

I've trained hounds, retrievers, and curs. They have to work because they love you.

Get the book Water Dog. Use his training method word for word and you'll have the best dog in the blind. Labs are very easy to train, it just takes persitence. http://www.amazon.com/Water-Dog-Revolutionary-Training-Method/dp/0525247343

Water Dog is way outdated. Training has come a long way since it was published. There are several really nice programs out there. The cheapest is Rick Stawaki's Fowl Dogs. I have never personally used this program but heard really good things about it. Gun Dog Supply has all 3 video's for $60. Evan Graham has a very nice program also. It's a lot more expensive but pretty easy to understand. His Smart Fetch is probably the best force fetch program out there. GCT trains with his program and has some nice dogs. The premier trainer in the US is Mike Lardy and his program is Total Retriever Training. This program is maybe a little harder to follow for someone new but it's outstanding. Just pick a program and stick with it. A good book to get started with is The 10 Minute Retriever by Amy and John Dahl. Dustin on this site recommended this book to me and it's pretty much what I used to train Rascal by,

Thank you for the book and video recommendations. Thats what I was wanting to know. What makes the Mike Lardy system more complicated?

I'm using the lardy system for the first time and have just started so I'm not sure to be honest with you. I have been told it's more in depth in the terminology used so a new trainer might not know what he was talking about in some cases. I've only gotten up to force fetch with the program and so far it's straight forward. The TRT set of 5 disc is $149 with free shipping I think. If you choose this program and did have problems understanding it there are several of us on this board that could help you out.Like I said before you are also welcome to train with most of us anytime you would like to,

Water Dog may be old, but it works and works well. I had Labs for years and used it to train several. My FIL at the age of 84 has trained more dogs than I've probably ever seen. He's finishing one now. He's the one who put me on the book. Just because it's old, doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Bama's 15 months and I taught him NO, Sit, Heel, Kennel, and Dead Duck. I'm not running any competitions so, just covered the basics and he does well retrieving ducks. Season's open here and he's gotten everything that's hit the ground (water)so far. Had fun watching him catch a diver, lol. I have used several duck wings over the summer just dragging them around and hiding them and he actually runs to the kennel when he sees a wing cause he knows I'll go hide it for him. "Kennel" is used at home as well as any ground blind I want him in while in the field.

There is a lot of Joy that comes from training one yourself and seeing them in action doing it right.
Best of luck to you. The best advice i can give you other than what has already been listed is to look into the biggest purchase you can afford of patience smile
They will try it for sure smile
One day they are smarter than your best friend, the next you will swear they are the dumbest that ever walked LOL

best of luck!
