Mine drives a suburban, but if you are looking at cars, honda civics have good safety ratings.

company car (sedan now, but everything from a minivan to an audi q5)
been in company cars most of our married life, but before company cars she had a used toyota avalon...still says that was her favorite driving vehicle that she's had over the years.

we have a 2004 suburban and 2015 scion xb. she drives both, prefers the suburban. the scion is our long-distance, much better mileage ultra dependable car.

Wife used to drive 2002 Xterra. When my truck got totaled I bought her a 2013 Explorer and I took the Xterra.
I would rather be tried by 12, than carried by 6.

I would highly recommend a Camry. They never die. You could probably spend $12,000 on a used one and have a car that will last 12 years.

Go to Carmax in Hoover and just walk the lot sitting in everything you might want. You will be surprised how a car you think you like you don't once you sit in it. Then go find you a used Camry or a Mazda CX-5.

Lexus LS that just turned 304k miles. Only non maintenance repairs were a radiator at 275k and wheel bearing at 290k.

Suburban...we got too many rug rats and activities to drive anything smaller. Had a mini-van when kids were a little younger, but the wife outgrew that. Love the Suburban for the family and room it offers. Plus...I can pull the boat with it and not have to take two vehicles when we go to the lake for the weekend....it likes gas though.
