In New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie saw a dire need for change in doctors� prescribing opioids. This state alone saw almost 1,600 drug-related deaths in 2015 alone.

Recently, the New Jersey governor signed legislation that restricts the drugs to a five-day time limit. Except for patients with chronic pain or cancer and for hospice use, doctors are forced to abide by the restriction. The new legislation also requires many health insurance companies to cover rehabilitating the addicted. With this new legislation, Gov. Christie is taking a huge measure that other state and national leaders need to follow.

I usually stay outa this kind of argument, but my turkey got away and I've got nothing to do except read aldeer. If I do any work I'm gonna make noise and run the turkeys off. So here goes: smile

I'm surprised nobody has discussed the practical effect of Gov. Christie's new law - if you have a major surgery in his state, then your Dr will be allowed to prescribe you only 5 days of pain meds. That's enough for many surgeries, but sometimes it ain't.

That our country has problems with prescription drug abuse is undeniable; that this new law will help even a little bit is very questionable. It will sure make life a lot tougher for some genuinely sick people, but beyond that I don't see that it does anything.

This is just a very typical govt response to a problem. People see a real problem and look to govt to fix it. Govt obligies by passing a law that only makes life harder for the people who weren't doing anything wrong in the first place, and the real problem continues on as it was.

I think a lot of people have views on the prescription drug issue that are outdated. Ten years ago it was indeed easy to find a Dr to prescribe pain meds. Now, most doctors are scared to death of writing a script even to their patients that really need them.
