Last year Florida voted for legalization of MEDICINAL marijuana, which I believe could be a good medicine for some medical problems like cancer. Now every county commission and city commission around are freaking out about how to handle sales of it. Heck, just let the pharmacist sell it instead of strip mall businesses. Most of them are just sticking their heads in the sand hoping it will all go away.

Says the fear-mongers & big pharma.

Again, look at the real life example of Portugal where drug use has been at a steady decline since decriminalization as well as lower crime rates. In fact, the crime rate in the US is nearly double that of Portugal.

Beyond discussing the medicinal benefits of MJ, I don't care about Portugal. I care about my Buddy who has watched his daughter use Meth and Heroine to the point of not caring about the well-being of her own 3 year old daughter. Disintegrated her marriage. Won't hold down a job. Could have gone to Auburn but would rather steal from her parents, get banged by black guys, scratch holes in her skin, rot her teeth out, live like an animal. This is the reality of illegalization. Do you think legalization will improve her situation?

You want more of this?

Marks, I feel for your buddy and their daughter, but there will always be idiots. You say that I am the one that "wants more of this" and that you "don't care about Portugal", yet the Portugal model creates LESS of the examples you have described. By sticking to strict drug laws, we are ensuring MORE occurrences of the same, not less. How has the presence of laws helped to curb her actions? They haven't.

Prescription drugs are illegal when it's not your prescription. That is a huge issue today. Folks selling their prescriptions to those without one.

I love Liberty and Freedom. But true liberty in a republic requires more than just freedom---it requires VIRTUE. For without virtue, liberty and freedom are easily corrupted. There is room for limited government to strive for ethical, moral and virtuous laws because it benefits the whole of society. The whole concept of establishing a government like ours is to promote individual liberty in an environment that is Good, Right, Noble, Just and Virtuous. Without those characteristics, Liberty become License and License will ultimately destroy Freedom.

And just where does this "virtue" come from? Virtue (along with those other characteristics) is rooted in the nature, essence and character of God.

Samuel Adams speaks to this in a most powerful way.

"No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders."........"A general dissolution of the principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy.... While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but once they lose their virtue, they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.... If virtue and knowledge are diffused among the people, they will never be enslaved. This will be their great security."

Samuel Adams

Drug addiction (in all the various forms, including alcohol) is slavery and corruption of the human condition. It is dangerous to our foundation as a nation. My 2 cents.

Well, making it illegal obviously didn't prevent it from happening.

No one in their right mind is going to start using heroine, or meth, or Oxycodone if they legalized it tomorrow. Only addicts will and guess what? They are doing it anyway.

To become an addict you have to start from somewhere. Every addict was at one time sober and a non-drug user. So yes, legal heroine and other drugs will get tried by first timers searching for ecstasy, euphoria, acceptance or just fun times in their troubled world.

All the status quo has done is likely lock her up and slap her with a felony for possession or paraphernalia.
If/when she gets clean that felony will likely be a massive hinderance to leading a clean life.

Like I said earlier, there is no perfect solution but the status quo hasn't been effective.

Lots of things I didn't do when I was younger, simply because they were illegal. To me, laws were like physical boundaries/cages. Removing barriers will increase usage. Why do we need more intoxicants?

I am opposed to legalizing drugs, including weed. I think we need to tighten up on prescription drug usage, as this is where the vast majority of heroin users start..and we have an epidemic of heroin use and overdose deaths.

I have a daughter that is a heroin user and abandoned her son and life to chase the drug. I know one day I will get the call she has overdosed..a real shitty way to think about your daughter. Do not talk to me about legalizing drugs.

If you want to do drugs we should just give you a plane ticket to Portugal. They can have the deadbeats and the problems that come with it.

Kinda like communists. If they love it so much why dont they move to a communist utopia like North Korea or China.

I would agree to decriminalize any drug USE, not selling/buying IF there was an automatic death penalty for selling ANY drug and max 30 days to carry it out.

Take all the states that legalized pot and those states make all other narcotics legal ,, street drugs too,, would there be a mass migration of people leaving their home town states for the newly proclaimed free for all drug abuse states ????

would you agree to declassifying Marijuana as a "drug" and treating it just like other tobaccos (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, etc) if it meant otherwise getting the above approved? Or do you consider marijuana to be in the same league as heroin, meth, etc?

Marijuana use since Colorado legalization. Some stats.

Among those 18-25 years old, marijuana usage has increased from 21 percent in 2006 to 31 percent in 2014.

Among those 26 or older, marijuana usage has increased from 5 percent in 2006 to 12 percent in 2014.

 Marijuana-related hospitalizations have increased from a rate of 803 per 100,000 pre-commercialization to 2,413 per 100,000 post-commercialization.

The period of retail commercialization showed a significant increase in emergency department visits, from 739 per 100,000 (20102013) to 956 per 100,000 emergency department visits (2014June 2015)

In the 2014-15 school year, school-based discipline for drugs accounted for 41% of all expulsions, 31% of all law enforcement referrals, and 6% of all suspensions in Colorado.

Keep in mind, this is only a short evaluation of MJ only.
