Here's a couple of pics if that helps. I don't have a grinder/cutting wheel, but know a couple folks that do. but if y'all think a couple good whacks with a hammer might do it, I may give that a try first.
I took one off the other day just like it in 5 minutes. Cut the small part right behind the locking mechanism about halfway with a hack saw and then bend it with a bar and break it or use a hammer to do the same. They aint tough at all.
