A lot of guys that say shooting a Jake is the worse thing you can do are hunting places that are covered up in turkeys. Some hunters will not have many opportunities. So I say it's totally up to you. I've killed several turkeys over the years but never a Jake. However, I don't see anything wrong with it if that's what you want to do.

My first turkey was a jake. Man was I proud of that dude. My dad didnt turkey hunt so I was learning on my own at 14 years old hunting across from my house. I got home threw that joker on the ground and stood over it 15 feet tall and bullet proof. Been eat up with it ever since.

Kill em if it will tickle you as much as you say. I've killed one Jake in my turkey hunting career. Which I think only consist of about a dozen kills. It was the second one I had killed but the first by myself. Now on the other hand my wife wouldn't shoot a Jake for her first bird cause she's a trophy hunter. Start that after she married you did she?

My first had an 11.5 inch beard and 1 3/8" spurs.
Would have been just as excited with a jake for my first bird though.

Give him a dirt nap if he shows up. Chances are he may have a few more little thuglets running with him, so just make sure you let them separate before you send him on his way.
Nothing at all wrong with shooting a jake.

People are leaving out the biological difference between the spike and the jake. There's a high probability of that spike living to see another year, so it's easy to make an argument for not shooting. A jake has about a 50/50 chance of living until next year due to the natural mortality of turkeys, mainly due to predators. For that reason, no one should make too big a deal of shooting jakes. A lot of them are bound to die one way or another. If you want to shoot him, go ahead. If 1/2 the jakes die, wouldn't that call for more reason Not to shoot one?

Truthfully, an argument can be made for either case. It's a 50/50 gamble. You might shoot the one that was going to survive, but you might shoot the one that was going to become a coyote's meal. You just don't know. A lot of people use your logic to avoid shooting them. All the reading I've done suggests shooting jakes has little to no impact on future numbers of gobblers. I think the state of Mississippi protects jakes. Has their turkey hunting surpassed ours?
If you have 2 jakes in front of you, our best estimates tell us that 1 will live and 1 will die before next season. You decide, that's all I'm saying.

What I've never understood is folks shooting a gobbling Jake just because he gobbles. Most won't shoot a quiet Jake , but if he gobbles they'll shoot him. Kinda like shooting cull bucks, just an excuse to shoot something. If ya wanta shoot Jakes, shoot them , they're legal but don't make excuses.

I shot one because he came back to my calling one too many times. I had a whole flock of turkeys in front of me but never got a clean shot at any of the longbeards. The hens eventually led them all away but the jakes kept coming back in. I figured that hunt was over anyway.

My 12 year old passed on some jakes last year with his bow.
He wanted his first bow bird to be as big as the others he's taken.
I was trying to get him to shoot one and he would not do it.
I wanted to whip him on the spot.

My wife wouldn't shoot one for her first bird on 3 different occasions. I've only killed one which was a case of mistaken identity. Never made that mistake again. I was hiding that thing like I killed him in July lol

Shooting a Jake is like sleeping with your sister are maybe worse. LOL!!!!  I only kill a jake if it's trying to sleep with my dekes; once they start dry-humpin' my dekes they're a dead azz

Interesting topic as my wife just shot her first turkey yesterday... ended up being a double-bearded jake, wouldn't trade it and our experience for a gobbler with 2" hooks (well, might trade it for that). I say go for it. I think everyone should kill a jake first as it's a "win" but still gives you something to work for.

I called up 3 jakes and 2 longbeards about 4pm today. Between the fighting, the strutting, and running around my son lost track of who was what and a jake hit the dirt. It wasn't his first turkey or first jake but we were just as excited is if it had been. Was an awesome show and an awesome hunt. I'll admit I have never seen a jakes wingtips worn down from strutting.
So I say shoot it.
