is killing a jake for your first turkey like killing a spike for your first buck? I'm going after my first turkey in the morning... By myself. I think I know enough to put myself in the position to be successful just by hunting with experienced hunters the last few years. I have seen a group of 5 gobblers several times last week of hunting season and several gobblers and jakes on camera. If I lure in a jake should I blast him or wait for an old long beard for my first bird?

They all eat the same.
I see nothing wrong with shooting a jake for your first turkey.

My first turkey was a Jake, but like 257 said, I was 10.

Depends on how many times you'll be able to go, if he gobbles and puts on the show, if you're going to eat him (obviously not doing it for the trophy) and if it makes you happy IMO.

I've allowed a couple of buddies to shoot them for their first at my place

I had a group of jakes last season ganging up and running everything off. all gobbled good. broke 2 decoy stakes. I was recruiting a kid to kill his first by year end.

I'm pretty sure a Jake is going to make my heart beat out of my chest before I realize what it is. I'll give him a pass though although it would probably feel like I killed a 12 point buck to me.. lol

If it's going to make you happy, shoot the hell out of them. It's a legal bird so who's to judge you imo

My first turkey was a jake, and I'm not afraid to claim it. If it makes you happy, kill it. If you want to kill 2 jakes, kill them.

Kill em if it will tickle you as much as you say. I've killed one Jake in my turkey hunting career. Which I think only consist of about a dozen kills. It was the second one I had killed but the first by myself. Now on the other hand my wife wouldn't shoot a Jake for her first bird cause she's a trophy hunter.

It's usually saved for youth. My 7 yr old killed a jake on sunday. But if it's legal and makes you happy, to hell with what other people think. They aren't anything for a grown man to brag about but if it makes you happy, give him a ride home and warm him up. He'll be cold in the morning.

I don't know enough about turkey hunting to know if calling your first bird in within shooting range and it being a jake is something to be proud of or not. Either way it should be fun in the morning.

People are leaving out the biological difference between the spike and the jake. There's a high probability of that spike living to see another year, so it's easy to make an argument for not shooting. A jake has about a 50/50 chance of living until next year due to the natural mortality of turkeys, mainly due to predators. For that reason, no one should make too big a deal of shooting jakes. A lot of them are bound to die one way or another. If you want to shoot him, go ahead.
