Hey guys! I have read where a guy had a big aquarium and kept a bass in it. Anybody else do this? I know the BP shops have them, but what about just having one in your house? Any tips or tricks on how to keep one? Would you just bring home your leftover minnows and pop them in the tank? Fish pellets? Small kittens? (no hate mail please, that was a joke)

man I've even herd of some people putting them in swimming pools without all the chemicals and stuff in it! Now thats either lazy or just plain stupid!

Or both! I am doing it for reference. I started doing taxidermy last year and painted my fish by reference photos, but to me you can't beat having the real deal to look at!

We kept one in a tank most of my years in college. We would come home drunk and tie a lizard onto a line (no hook) and fight that sucker with an ultra light. We had alot of fun with that fish.  I think it was a 20g tank and he was about 2lbs maybe. still fun for the UL We would feed him minnows, crawfish, etc. Had a buddy that kept a bream or two like that. The bream are bad about fighting though. We watched a bream and an african cyclid (sp?) go at it for about a week one time. Those two hated each other. We finally released the bream or they both would have died.

i had a friend that kept one for a while in a regular size aquarium and that thing was awsome to watch at feeding time. he could see that my buddy had the minnows and he would back into a corner with his head angled up and just wait. as soon as that minnow was dropped he would fly up and snatch the minnow and blow the scales out his gills.

I had a 30 gal. tank with bass, bluegill, and channel cat in it...all were about 4" long when I put them in. The catfish kept biting at the sides of the bass, and eventually killed one and left sores on a couple others. The bream did ok with the bass...they grew faster than the bass, so predation wasn't an issue.
As far as using them for reference in taxidermy work...dunno how well that will work out. Bass are colored differently according to the water conditions in their habitat. Pond bass, for example, are sometimes very light green with a very faint or no black stripe. Fish from tea colored water, on the other hand, like many creeks and lakes in Florida, are a rich, dark color with a very prominent black stripe. ...same with bream.

I had a little bass in an fish tank. I put tuffies in there for him to eat. They would all swim around in peaceful harmony and all of a sudden all hell would break loose. Somehow the minnows all knew when it was feeding time and go bezerk. The bass would eat a few and things would calm back down to everybody just lazily swimming around. I watch them for a long time trying to figure out what triggered a feeding attack but never noticed anything. It just seemed to happen.

i had a little spotted bass in a 30 gallon once. it ate goldfish like there was no tomorrow. it was cool to watch but with all of that eating, the tank got nasty quick. it was a lot of work to keep it sanitary so i ended up letting him go. i'm talking less than a week and it needed cleaning

Bass get bigger and so do their appetites. They are high maintenance. Bluegills are the most aggressive bream and also eat alot.  Green sunfish eat dried shrimp pellets which are cheap and easy. They eat them on the fall and sometimes off the bottom. The fish itself is not that spectacular.  Longeared sunfish can be coaxed to eat shrimp pellets but I had to feed them dried Krill which they ate topwater. These fish are very pretty.  Redbreast were submissive and didn't fare well with more agressive fish like bluegills. They were also hard to feed and preferred the krill. I did have one survive longer than the other bream in the tank though.

My son has a 3" bluegill in his aquarium. He feeds it anything alive he finds in the yard during the warm months and fish flakes during the winter. He had a bass, but the bluegill beat him up pretty bad, so he put the bass back in the pond.
