I began hunting squirrels with a pellet gun just a few years after I got out of diapers, then graduated to a 16 gauge, then a 22, I learned to hunt by hunting red birds, mocking birds, black birds, squirrels, rabbits, quail, and dove. I was fifteen before I ever hunted deer and sixteen before I killed one.
Todays younger hunters have never learned to hunt by hunting small game and IMO that may be having a bigger dumbing down effect.
