What say ya'll? Is tail cameras and sitting in a comfy shooting house making it too easy? Is old school woodsmanship, reading sign, learning the land and deer, gonna be a thing of the past?

Probably.

I guess you could say I still hunt old school. I hunt woods, no greenfields, no corn, nothing but learning the land and hunting it. I sit on the ground, but have one small ladder stand I move around a good bit. I have 1 camera and only set it up on trails, no bait, around the time the season starts. I usually kill several deer a year and usually see several good bucks. Hunting the wind is a must.

This has been common knowledge for yrs.To most hunting is sitting in a shooting house. Trial cams are a tool. If you've used one you know that half the deer you get pics of ,you never see.

I have one shooting house. It's only purpose was to hunt in with my son until he got old enough to climb a ladder stand. Now we use it very rarely, but if it's too cold for him to be in a ladder we use it.

For me a trail camera helps pattern deer without stinking up the woods as much. I know the places I hunt like the back of my hand, so I don't have to discover anything, I just use the cameras to get an "inventory" of the herd and to see when they hit certain food sources.

Same here I only have one camera in the woods. I don't hunt corn, I hunt the woods. Our club has 43 food plots, the only time I'll sit them is whenever I carry my daughter with me. And I agree 110% hunting the wind is a must.

I think cameras are a great tool, just don't know bout using them in season.

No for trail cams. They're a good tool.

I ain't sure about the gadgets, but reading some of Shuter's posts can certainly make you dumber-er.

You got a lot of balls calling someone dumb when you are the one who said that the velocity of a bullet has little to do with it's expansion. Or something to that exact effect.

I killed my first deer at age 13. The only deer around here were in the Blackwarrior river swamp. You had drivers,dogs and you were put out on a stand. Then I started to hunt I would sit on the ground close to an oak bottom and wait if nothing showed I would move to another location. Things have really changed.

Trail cameras are a great tool. I really enjoy checking them and it is a great excuse to get in the woods. As for shooting houses. I hunt on family owned land . All i have is shooting houses and 1 climber. Where i hunt is remote and i hunt by myself.i i have a small child and a wife at home for whom i am the only provider. So shooting houses for me are about safety and the ability to hunt in any weather condition. I dont get to hunt much so when i do i want to be able to go no matter what. For me its not about killing. Its about going and enjoying the hunt. I see plenty of wildlife everytime. But the most important thing to me is a safe return. In the end its about getting what you want out of the hunt. Also when you are 6ft 4in and 345lbs you tendto think about putting your well being in the hands of someone elses craftmanship. In the end, hunt how you want as long as you enjoy it!

I see no problems with shooting houses or trail cameras. Its up to you to use them or not. if its not "hunting" sitting in a shooting house or using trail cams then is it not hunting to use rifle or compound bows? we all cant wear deer skin clothes and throw spears tipped with handmade arrowheads to kill deer. For me i need every advantage i can get.

i still hunt the "old school" way. i tried a camera one time but couldn't figure it out, but i have a good idea of how big of a deer i'm hunting by it's signs, i don't need to know every deer in the woods. and i don't sit in shooting houses unless it's pouring down rain.

I began hunting squirrels with a pellet gun just a few years after I got out of diapers, then graduated to a 16 gauge, then a 22, I learned to hunt by hunting red birds, mocking birds,black birds,squirrels, rabbits, quail, and dove. I was fifteen before I ever hunted deer and sixteen before I killed one.
Todays younger hunters have never learned to hunt by hunting small game and IMO that may be having a bigger dumbing down effect.

I have been hunting for over 70 years and have hunted just about every way there is to hunt. I now hunt deer primarily from shooting houses and tree stands, on or near food plots.

Most clubs now a days would frown on a member stomping around in the woods hunting the "old way." Hunting the old way on public land is really a hit and miss situation. IMO most deer killed on public land by folks hunting the old way are killed while fleeing from some other hunter hunting the old way. Also, with the numbers of hunters out these days, who are just a little trigger happy, its very dangerous. So I am just sort of wondering, other than private land, where can one hunt the old way???????

So far for me cameras are great for some pictures but other than that no. Ive got some great pictures but im hunting different places than where the cameras are out. I still go back to my roots when going in the woods.
