Ruger or Smith medium frame .38 or .357.Why?Wadcutter.38 light recoil clean cutting and as he grows you can add power.Plus that revolver will be prized when he's 19.

We looked at the heritage at academy. He liked it. If I bought the ruger or browning I would probably be thinking as much about what I want as what he wants. I'm not really a revolver fan but he held that heritage and really liked it. Then again he likes about anything that goes bang.

I found it. It's blued and looks like a half mile of bad road but seems to function ok. Sitting in a rocket box in a leather holster for twenty or more years didn't really do it any good. I don't know why I thought it was silver.
I have a holster that looks much like the piece and the extra cylinder in .22 mag. It's a spesco made in west germany and from what I can find is worth about twenty dollars in it's current shape.

I try to do good every moment of every day. That means a fair price and an honest description for a thing. It has surface rust on it that may or may not come off. You can wipe it down aggressively with a piece of denim soaked in oil and that may work. If not, you would need to wipe it down very VERY VERY gently with 0000 steel wool soaked in oil.
I would ask gundoc how he gets surface rust off weapons without damaging the finish. Of course, if you damage the finish you're out like two lunches at taco casa.

I'll be honest. I've shot exactly one heritage and it didn't shoot worth a crap. I'd save that money. I realize the single sixes are pretty pricey. Just get him a buckmark or ruger and be done with it. They are great pistols and reasonably priced. Get him something he will be proud of in 20 years. I honestly don't think the heritage is it.

It works. neighbors probably don't appreciate me shooting at 11:00 at night but. Meh.
The rust appears to be just surface and no pitting. Won't really know until I can get it all off. The hammer is silver. Maybe that was what I remembered. Kind of surprised I remembered at all after twenty something years lol.

Stupid thing bit me. I just spent ten minutes trying to manhandle the center pin out so I could remove the cylinder and clean this mess up a bit. I have no idea what got me but my trigger finger is now bleeding all over.
I hate it when that happens.

Ruger Single Six. Small caliber and simple. with a single action, there are less safety concerns. He can't just keep shooting and if he fires then points in an unsafe direction, the gun is a little safer than an auto. One shot at a time teaches better discipline for safety, form, and accuracy anyway. Ding,ding,ding winner^^^^ An automatic is not the best choice for starter pistol IMO

Mark II Ruger. That's a 22. I much prefer them to the Mark III 22/45 Agree plus the option of the light pencil barrel is really easy for a young gun to balance and shoot well

A little 0000 steel wool and oil with light buffing will take surface rust off without damaging finish now you will see where the rust was and nothing inexpensive can solve that issue and if you get aggressive with buffing it will take the finish off

The best thing to take surface rust off is a penny. Just make sure it is one that is made of copper. Google it.
