What would it be? Thinking about getting my boy one for his birthday. No, he wont be shooting it without me right there. He's been shooting my wife's bodyguard alot lately. Thinking maybe something a little smaller, in caliber not frame.

Between $200-$300. Caliber is one thing in asking about. 25,32,22,22mag. Was thinking a little smaller than 380. Would like to be able to get ammo easily.

Browning buck mark Or similar type 22 ruger. These pistols are fun to shoot and don't break the ammo bank

That's what I was thinking. Would it fit 10yr old hands? He has shot my 40cal s&w. Hands were a bit small, then the kick. He didn't ask to shoot it again. He loves shooting my wife's bodyguard. I would assume the gun being a little big for his hands wouldn't be so bad if there was no kick.

Mark II Ruger. That's a 22. I much prefer them to the Mark III 22/45

Either of the above would work well, fit in your budget and be relatively inexpensive to shoot.
I want to say AC870 had a plain jane Mark II for sale for 275 clams. I saw it and handled it - very nice pistol.

A Browning or a Ruger. Buy at least 2 bricks of ammo. Maybe 3.
My son got a wild hair to shoot during that ammo crisis couple a years ago. He shot everything I had and we had to drive to Boaz to buy more.

I've been wanting a ruger target pistol myself. Used to shoot my brothers alot. Really liked it. Might do that and kill 2 birds.

Ruger Single Six. Small caliber and simple. with a single action, there are less safety concerns. He can't just keep shooting and if he fires then points in an unsafe direction, the gun is a little safer than an auto. One shot at a time teaches better discipline for safety, form, and accuracy anyway.

Good call modoc. The single sixes are a fine, fine pistol. Good to teach how to shoot a pistol too instead of just burning through ammo in an autoloader.

I want to say I have a single action cowboy type .22/.22 mag no name revolver around here somewhere I traded a nice knife for about two decades ago. I almost never used it. I don't even remember how it shoots. It's silver. Don't remember if it's nickel or stainless though I doubt it's stainless come to think of it. Was only worth about 100 clams then.
If you want it holler at me - would be better for someone to use it than to sit in one of my rocket boxes and do nothing.

If the prices for the single six on gunbroker are what's normal, he wont be getting one of those for his birthday. The mark II and buckmark are at the top of my budget, but doable. I generally don't spend that much on a birthday but id rather spend twice as much as usual and get something he will have from now on rather than pay $150 for a toy my wife will give away in a couple of years.

I would say come get it and go to the South Sandy shooting range (twenty minutes away) and check it out. It may or may not. I was just helping out a friend who needed a good quality knife and never once cared about that old thing. I think it has a holster with it. Let me go drag out that rocket box and see if I can put my hands on it.

You will never go wrong with a Buckmark. I've never regretted buying mine. Got it when I was 19.
If you want to spend less, look at a Heritage Rough Rider. I almost bought one once and regret not getting it.

If not, I think there was a Heritage .22 for sale somewhere...classifieds, maybe? If not a .22, which would be my first choice, the next smallest thing I'd get would be a 9mm...ammo is cheaper and way more available than a .380 or .25, and a 9mm is a very forgiving gun to shoot and learn on if recoil is a concern.
