I've not paid much attention to the rule changes in the off season and a random conversation with a friend he told me that shooting a doe on Saturday would be taking a deer out of season in most of Madison county. He said I would need to wait until the 23rd of December to take a Doe in Madison county on private land. I've looked at the Deer Zone maps, and sure enough it appears to be the case. It was announced. Not a lot of hoopla. Mostly just announced and left to hunters to read up on the regs and changes. I almost did the same thing recently but double-checked, fortunately.

You missed all the hoopla. The QDMA tactics of "shoot dem does" have nearly wiped out most of the deer in a lot of areas, and the 80 does you could legally shoot up until last year can't be sustained, per the state.

Not all of Madison county has the shortened doe season, I hunt 3 properties in Madison county. 2 have the shortened season and one is still wide open. It's an odd line between does and no does.

This might not effect you either, but thats only for gun hunting. Bow hunting is still wide open.

I don't think I took it for granted, I just think that the amount of noise made about 10 additional hunting days vs the noise made regarding the doe hunting days is pretty interesting. For reference, there are 83 gun hunt days available. Nov 19 - Feb 10, 10 days more than last season(13%). More than 10 counties had some part or all of their doe season cut by 40%. I just would have expected a little more noise regarding it. It does effect 2 of the 3 properties I hunt. Still my responsibility to know to the rules changes, no doubt.

the problem is drawing imaginary lines on a map does very little to help and is way to general.
I have two pieces of property I hunt that are in the new very limited doe days area. both are covered in does. I have one piece of property about 20 miles south of the limited doe days zone where I can legally shoot one per day but has a very limited deer population.
It just doesn't make any sense to me to. For those hunting in Winston county doe days were the first two weekends of gun season. this coincides with the rut. now they cant shoot does until the dec 23rd through the week after Christmas. If I hunted that area there aint no way I would shoot a doe during the rut so I would be limited to about 10 days all season that I could shoot a doe. Place a season limit, give out tags, but let me manage my property and shoot my does how best works for my land.

Because for many years we enjoyed being able to freely decide what we needed/wanted to do on our land and how we wanted to hunt. Only in the last 10 years has there been a flurry of "Fix It" changes. More changes will come, though. Bank on it.

That is your option and choice to wait and not shoot a doe during the first set of doe days. Correct, it is my opinion not to shoot does during the first set of doe days because it is the RUT... It is also a FACT. that I have two different properties loaded with deer that I cannot shoot a doe on for most of the season because of a line on a map. and one property with almost no deer that I can kill one per day. I have been told that the DCNR is going to use the information from game check to adjust the map but to me it seems that this is just going to be a county by county adjustment since that is how data is collected and there are many counties where hunting from one side of the county to the other can be very different.[/color]

One thing remains certain. If there is a way for the gov't to get involved and make some money off the land, or the people using it, they will do it. If not immediately, all of these changes being implemented, will eventually be a money grab for the state. Why did this or that happen? Why did this change occur? Follow the money....
