I'm going to hunt public land for the first time this weekend in Barbour co. Ive already scouted out several places. My spots are at least 400- 500 yds from main roads. I need some "do's" and don'ts" regarding etiquette. What to do if I walk up on someone just 100 yds off road and I wanting to further in? Do I go to another spot? Any general advice for parking? Or any general advice at all? I don't want to be "one of those guys". I plan on getting checked in early and getting to spots well before daylight.

Don't park at the same spots as someone else and you should be fine

I've hunted public land all my life. Every time I have walked up on someone I just kept walking. I don't want to be close to anyone other than me with a gun. I have major issues with goobers with guns. I have always gotten as far away from other people as I could. I have killed several big bucks that way too

I would rather be tried by 12, than carried by 6.

Just waive at them and yell out "I'M GOING FARTHER INTO THE WOODS THAN YOU GOOBER" and you'll be fine.

Lol I don't think I'm going to call anyone with a loaded gun a goober. Thanks for the replies guys. I'm hoping the first spot is going to be all mine. It's a long, hilly walk. Briars too. The tree available to climb doesn't have any scars from being climbed before, but who knows. My lease is only 10 minutes away if it's crowded there.

And ALWAYS, once you get where you're going, shoot into the ground about once every 30 minutes just to make them think you are in a serious honey hole and that they picked the worst spot on the whole property.

If somebody is already parked where I want to go, I just go somewhere else. You have to have plan A, B and C when hunting public land. If by chance I did walk in and somebody else was already in there I wave and leave. That's just me. Most people won't offer that courtesy to you but bad things can happen when idiot with guns are in the same vicinity.

This is what I do. Have a couple back up spots and I don't want to be near anyone so I'll leave the area if I walk in on someone.

I walked in on somebody last weekend on public land. Saw the hunter, waved my orange hat at him, he waved back and I turned around and walked back the way I came. Just treat others like you want to be treated.

Man - I really need to start reading these threads before I reply to them. What he is saying makes no sense now.

Hey I hunted Skyline a few times over the past few years and at the guard shack to get our permits, 4 350+ lb guys pulled up in a Civic on a gun day. You never know what you'll see on gun days on public land.

I'm the same way though. We have 1500 acres in Stevenson (bow only), so I'm going to stick with that.

Thanks for replies and suggestions. This will be the only gun hunt I'll go to there. I just want to see what's it's like. I really like this area that I've got picked out. The biologists said this weekend will be way less crowded because of Alabama auburn game. I will be bow hunting a lot there when gun hunts aren't going on. I also know some big deer are taken there as well. I'm looking forward to the adventure!

I've never done the early hunt there, but I've done several later season hunts. It is a chit show unlike any other wma I've hunted. I bet there were 3-400 people camping in February last year.
