The bullet came from elsewhere from an angle just barely higher than the platform.
The expanded metal is difinitely a rounded out pass through and the first point of impact.
The square tubing damage exit path exactly lines up and has signs of the bullet passing through the outside of it in a glancing, plowing blow.
Somebody shot from somewhere else, the path and shape has all the answers. Just look at the close-up pics. This.

I think you're right, lightning is really the only thing that fits for me.

I do think it was a bullet. Looks like you can see fragment splatter in the bottom.

In the closest close up, look at the cracked paint on the square tubing that was caused by the pulling force of the bullet on the square tubing.
It's a bullet hole.

The hole is square.. Can't be a bullet. I say a lightning strike

An inbound bullet isn't going to push metal out. This is also the top of the stand, looking down

Period. It's possible I guess. There is a big pasture that backs up to the property.I guess someone could have shot into that pasture at a deer or something at night and it coulda hit it.It just seems damn near impossible to me that someone could shoot into the pasture at something from the road and hit my tripod like that. There is a patch of trees about 50 yards wide between my tripod and the pasture but the angle of the land and someone shooting at a deer sized target seems impossible to me that the bullet would hit like it did especially with the tripod being 15 ft in the air..Here's an aerial of the place. The red spot is where my tripod is.

This is also the top of the stand, looking down Yes, I based my observations on that. And the fact that the shot direction originated from behind the stand, from back of the stand to front of the stand.

Then I bullet would have to come straight down, fired from a looking way away.. By that time, the bullet isn't moving fast enough (and tumbling) to go through 1" square tubing. you may get a dent and chipped paint.. Also, where the bullet? Any less angle and you'll have a deflection on the tubing
Say someone is hunting troxs stand and their gun discharges... Then you will have a round hole and a pass through. Tubing (round or square) splits when it freezes, not punch holes
It can only be a lightning strike. Some edges are pushed in and some are blown out

The bullet skimmed the top of the platform like a skipping stone, is my thinking.

Looks like a bullet hole. That was my first thought. In this pic you can see where it really looks like a bullet done it but I don't know how it would even be possible unless someone trespassed and purposely climbed my ladder and done it.I just don't know. If you also look inside the hole, you can see what appears to be some spalling. I would be interested as to what the feet look like to see if any marks on them.

Anyway that's enough for me. That's my theory and belief. At first glance it could pass as a bullet hole, but did you notice that the expanded metal is also broke loose in the bottom of the close up pic. A bullet isn't going to do all that. It's tall, metal and in the middle of a cut over..

Ohhhh that would never happen Looks like a light round, like a .22LR or .22Mag. Well, upon closer examination I change my mind. Lightening most likely.
