If he's serious, ask him for a taste before you buy. If he won't do it, ask him when the salesman will be there, because they usually carry a little sample case around with them for just that thing.

Buffalo Trace is hard to beat for the price. If you can find it. Another couple of good ones are Blantons and Basil Hayden. Just a little more pricey, but well worth if you drink it Neat or with a couple of ice cubes.

I think Geno turned us all on to Tito's Vodka, and there is a noticeable difference in it and Stoli and so forth. There are some pleasant surprises to be had out there, some of them obscure or not widely advertised.

Titos is so smooth you c an sip it.

First you need todetermine if you want bourbon or just any whiskey. I don't like Tennessee whiskey, Irish whiskey, or Canadian whiskey. Rye isn't bad on occasion. I drink bourbon almost exclusively with some scotch on a rare day.

Wild Turkey 101 is my everyday drink. Woodford, Makers, Bulliet, or Buffalo Trace sometimes. Blantons or Four Roses if I want something special.

Doekiller, I agree on the Irish Whiskeys and the Canadian Whiskys, mainly because I don't particularly like a blended spirit that won't stand on it's own, or maybe just a couple of spirits blended. Some of them might be blended with a dozen spirits to achieve taste.There are some exceptions like the single malt Scottish spirits and of course the American mainstays.

I've got a pretty simple and unsophisticated palate compared to a lot of you guys, but I know what I like as soon as I try it.

Other European Spirits and, heck, a lot of Rums from the Islands usually reuse American once-used spirit or Port Wine casks as well.

I don't drink a whole lot, but when I do, I prefer something quality. I drink Buffalo Trace at home. Blanton's for a smooth change of scenery.

I have tried a lot of whiskeys and always end up back at turkey 101.

OK...

First off: Don't buy or drink anything with any "flavor" added to it. "Fire," "Honey," or any of that crap. That is the cheap crap whiskey that a distillery makes and they add some flavorings to it anad market it to rednecks, fags and women.

Secondly: A whiskey or bourbon doesn't have to be expensive to be good. Don't pay any attention to whiskey, bourbon or scotch snobs who tell you what is good or what to drink. The only thing that matters is your taste buds. And while we are on that subject, don't let people tell you how to drink your whiskey, [As long as you don't drink it with Coke or Sprite or some chit like that. ] Try different whiskeys neat, on the rocks, with a little water or with a little water and on the rocks and see what you like the best. All have their place depending on the whiskey you are drinking. Some need water and some need ice, some need both and some don't need anything.

Thirdly: Look at some of the lower shelves for old familiar brands that are "Bottled in Bond." Each distillery comes out with "Bottled in Bond" editions regularly. In many cases these are very fine limited edition whiskeys whose taste far exceeds their price point. Research what "Bottled in Bond" means.

Fourthly: Whiskeys I like in no particular order or price point...

Blantons [Outstanding, but pricey]
Jeffersons [All are good, but the Sherry cask and the Ocean are outstanding, but pricey.]
Four Roses [The 80 proof is about the best everyday whiskey you can buy, and the 90 proof barrel select is very good. The 100 proof Single Barrel is outstanding.]
Jim Beam [Bottled in bond]
Old Charter [Bottled in Bond]
Old Crow [Bottled in Bond]
Old Granddad [Bottled in Bond. Had some this weekend at the cabin. Unusually good for the price.]
John Emerald Alabama Whiskey [This whiskey is like scotch and bourbon had a love child. Unbelievably good.]
Chattanooga 1816 Whiskey [Both the 90 proof Reserve and the 113 proof Cask are both outstanding]
Wild Turkey 101 [A good solid whiskey]
Buffalo Trace
W.L. Weller [This is an outstanding whiskey at a very reasonable price point. Solid Bourbon that would stand up to anything.]
Old Forester 100 proof [Another solid whiskey at a good price point.]
Woodford Reserve [We toured their distillery and let me tell you, this place and this whiskey is first class all the way. Excellent.]

I have tried all of these and they are all good and I will personally vouch for them. I have tried many more, but can't remember right now, cause I'm tired and sleepy with the time change.

Only exception I would make Irish is Makers Mark makes a Mint Julep for Derby time that's pretty darn good.

You know I was half pulling people's leg about the flavored stuff. I like a good Mint Julip, a Manhattan, an Old Fashioned, etc... on occasion.

I am a fan of Woodford reserve myself it's what I drink modst of the time, for those folks wanting to try different Bourbon's if you live around Birmingham go to Jim & Nicks in Hoover they have a LARGE selection of top shelf Bourbon's and whiskey's, the other Jim & Nicks may have the same selections but that is the only one I go in..

It's been alluded to previously, but there is a distinction between bourbon and whiskey and blended. To some it is just brown liquor, and to others, don't get them mixed up, hahaha.

Can't go wrong with just about anything from the Buffalo Trace distillery. From the namesake to Elmer T Lee to Blanton's. But one of my favorites is Eagle Rare. Quality for lower price point. But good luck finding it. ABCs around here seem to get cases every 4-6 weeks. And they don't last long.

Every day choice would be Makers.
